I had 3 roosters at one time. They all got along good amazingly . All shared the coop with the hens. Everyone had their favorite rooster , at night you could tell who is in who's group because they rooster together in their groups.
This went on for almost two years untill my neighbors dog went on a mauling spree.
I was pissed..
Two of the roosters got away fairly ok. All were really freaked out., but the two just had a few little scraps n missing feathers especially on the tail. . I found one in the barn rafters , I got him down easily. His tail feathers were crunched but otherwise he was ok. The other one was on top of the coop with about the same injury n his top hat had a bite out of it.
The 3 rooster I had to search for. I followed the trail of feathers expecting to find a dead rooster. He took the brunt of the fight, to my surprise i found him alive just over the garden fence on a drift of snow.
It was the beginning of November n we had just a tad of snow on the ground. His name was Stalker n I called him n he give a weak greeting back. He was bloodied, back skin was torn in two places, a bunch of feathers gone n just looked up at me pathetically.
I thought about ending him ..he was a mess. When I picked him up he just melted into my arms n well..sigh..I figured I'd take him in n clean him up first.
He was pretty beat up but his tears weren't deep. I figured if he had the will to live I'd give him a chance.
He ended up spending about 2 months in my little ICU I made for him in my bathroom. Since it was below freezing out I could move him outside until he had good healing.
It was alot of work..I had to clean daily sometimes twice but he healed up nice enough to go into the barn in a kennel. Come spring he was ready to rejoin his friends. But that didnt go over well. He was gone too long n it disrupted the whole order , his brothers rejected him n he was barely tolerated. He would roost alone in the barn at night.
He had become my buddie during his recovery. On my weekends, in winter I either read or watched a movie. I recall I had a star wars marathon one weekend. I put him on a towel on my lap n he sat there n watched star wars with me..had some popcorn too.
Since he was my favorite now..I was going to find homes for my two other roosters n he could take over the coop.
3 weeks after he was on his own again, I came home from work. I see the two other roosters taking turns standing on his body like in a king of the mountain contest. At first, I assumed they ganged up on him. The worst they did was chase him away from the coop n girls. He wasn't interested in fighting n would run n lurk about as a loner.
Upon closer inspection n a call from my friend..my friend came over while I was at work, when she left ..she ran him over. Half his body was squashed. She didnt realize she ran him over either when I talked to her..but she mentioned to me how my miracle rooster is like a dog. He followed her around as she was doing her thing..she fed him a tortilla snack before she left.
My friend is now in her 70's n her driving is pretty scarry. I didnt tell her she ran over Stalker..I blaimed it on the fed ex guy when she asked.
The two other roosters bit the dust eventually. I now have my original rooster back from my neighbor who I gave him too years ago. He was hand raised by me n a very gentle calm boy. I gave him to my neighbor who had lost her rooster. Ironically, it was her dog that attacked my coop. She got this dog n ended up having to pen the birds. I ended up taking him back alone with a hen after her cancer came back. It worked out since I needed a rooster n Jack needed out of that situation.
