I took my first wilderness trip at age 15; My pregnant wife and I took our one year old son to Alaska to homestead; I was a guide and outfitter on my own ranch in Colorado; I owned an athletic club; I designed and built four homes (one log, one rough sawn beam, one underground and one a combination of all three) and I have written three books and am working on my fourth. If you want to know more look at my post entitled "Ever thought of living in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Hello and a warm welcome from out in the woods of southern Oregon, met and married my wife in Denver, spent a lot of time at 12,000 feet and above fishing and elk hunting, all that tromping around in those high altitudes probably helped me survive a bout of congestive heart failure in 2018. When we came here I designed a semi earth bermed home and started pouring the concrete walls for it but it never got built due to the cost of lumber going beyond our financial abilities, I ended up building a 1,400 square foot cottage, u is pretty self sufficient, gravity feed water system and a solar backup system. I'll be 80 in not too many months and so the semi earth home is off the list of things to do, but we're happy with what we have and it's all paid for, anyway, good to see you here, I'm sure you have plenty of info to share.

Welcome from Eastern Missouri. Sounds like you have very impressive skills, and we could all learn from your expertise, Good to have you with us.

Welcome from Colorado. I am a native of South Dakota. I lived there until I was 21, when I left to finish my degree. My ancestors were agrarian peasants and that carried on when they came to America. I come from a family of farmers and ranchers. I shared in another of your threads that my grandfather was 14 when he was alone on his father's homestead by Faith, SD.

Thank you all for the nice welcomes and if there is anyway I can be of service or help to anyone just ask. I originally joined in hopes of getting very lucky and finding someone here who may like to talk about possibly helping each other. I ran this add somewhere on here but can't seem to find it, so I thought I would post it again here. -

How would you and/or your family like an opportunity to live on a large working ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Including use of 40 acres of pasture, a large garden area, a really nice root cellar, lots of apple trees, and a 3 bedroom, 1,280 square foot really nice mhome, or a larger very old home in need of repair. In exchange for either or, some the following - Cooking, cleaning, maintaining machinery, ranch help or other. I would even build a greenhouse in exchange for organic garden produce. Let’s talk. Leave a message and a phone number for me at 605 833 2000 and I will call you back. And or look me up first on Amazon under books type in Gary Friendshuh, click on any book, then click on follow the author, then click on my name.

Thanks again
Gary
