And the reason I won't rely on a freezer!

I just went to the freezer t pull out some rolls for dinner and they were defrosted..... a panic and further investigation found the freezer unplugged. Well it's my fault, I unplugged it last night to do something and forgot to plug it back in. I have checked everything else, but luckily the only losses was the rolls and some bread. It just reminds me why I prefer home preserving and canning to relying on the freezer. No need to worry about power or breakdowns.

we've just had a new kitchen fitted- courtesy of housing association, due to the configuration of the units and work tops we have had to get rid of a perfect chest freezer(and probably a fridge to follow) and buy a fridge freezer, I don't like them myself but its the only thing that will fit in the new kitchen.

In this house vain teenagers and their girlfriends who either need access to hair driers, straighteners, and places to charge phones and I pads are a blight. I have taken to putting tape over sockets for the fridge , freezer etc to stop the little ***** from unplugging them but not putting them back in when they have finished. They are also learning the expensive way that after I have told them THREE times not to leave unconnected phone and laptop chargers plugged in and turned on I throw them in the bin.

I love my chest freezer. Yes there's a chance of it breaking down or power loss etc. I have the power covered with a generator I can cycle on three times a day to keep it frozen, and luckily it's out by itself where no one will ever unplug it. One thing I do when building is put plug ins everywhere, so not an issue anyways. I figure when it does break down I'll have one heck of a barbeque! Thanksgiving is just under two months away. I always buy turkeys when there on sale to eat all year. Canning is a more certain way of preserving, but the freezer is really convient.

the only way our fridge and freezer can get unplugged.is if someone moved the microwave and microwave stand out of the way.even then.the fridge and freezer has to be moved first..

I feel you SallyC, experienced that here too, thanks to my oldest son ;)

I remember when the power went out on the east coast a decade or so ago it was out for quite a while. All our food was ruined. Definitely a lessons learned for us too
