Amazon paid zero federal taxes last year

Money is just a big circle jerk. Some people waste their entire lives letting money consume them.

In reading the article, it seems to state they will pay 21 percent on deferred taxes vs. the standard 35 percent. That's still nearly 2 billion dollars. I'm not sure how they are equating a 789 million dollar discount with paying zero in taxes.

Good for them. They have some great accounts at Amazon that worked within the system to reduce their Federal tax rate. Don't we all do everything we can to reduce our taxes? Don't you?

I would agree with you if it was a citizen who worked to reduce his taxes to zero, absolutely. However, this is a giant corporation making billions of dollars that the government could use to help us citizens, yet somehow they paid zero taxes. Meanwhile dirt poor people like myself have to pay taxes. Just seems not right.

It's not the governments job to "help" us people. Read and understand the Constitution. If you truly are "poor" you don't pay Fed taxes anyway. The rest of us pay your way. If you don't like being poor, you can work harder to get a better job, or take a second job, learn a skill that is in demand or move to a location that has more opportunities. In case you don't know it, a corporation is made up of people; share holders and employees.

The government uses taxes for things our society needs, therefore they help us with the taxes. I paid fed taxes. This has nothing to do with me enjoying being poor. It has everything to do with a giant company making billions yet somehow not paying their fair share while the rest of the citizens who follow the rules pay their fair share.

Again, Amazon is working within our current tax system to reduce their Federal tax burden. The same way the rest of us do. Do you refuse to take a tax break or a tax write-off when you fill out your tax "return"? Of course not, that would be stupid, So why shouldn't a corporation take advantage of saving as much of THEIR money as they legally can?

Then our current tax system is flawed.

The baby boomers are really ******* everyone over. They just sit around collecting social security and racking up huge medical bills that us taxpayers have to cover. Then they have the nerve to act like their generation is better than the younger generations, even though we pay for them to be old worthless do-nothings.

most baby boomers are still in the workforce, right? Is it the generation before the boomers who have retired? Or am I getting that wrong?

Its the social securty system and medicare thats at fault, not the boomers.

And out of the mouths of babes......comes ignorance and stupidity.

You mean like our president?

If I am correct, and I am, the baby boomers paid into SS their entire lives. Not voluntarily I might add. Then, the vast majority either die at retirement age or shortly afterwards, never collecting even what they paid in. Sure, some collect into their 90’s, but that’s not average. The govt has used the SS funds and mismanaged them, aka stolen.

Then our current tax system is flawed.
I absolutely agree with that, though not for the same reasons that you do. Our current tax system is far too complex for one thing. Not to mention taxes are way too high. When I worked in Russia they had a simple 15% income tax, and the tax form was one page long. In the US my tax "return" is 50-65 pages long.

Not entirely accurate... There are some baby boomers in the workforce in their upper 50's, but most others are primarily retired or dead (the oldest boomers are in their 70's). It's the Gen X'ers (like me) that are most predominantly the older folks in the workforce (late 30's to early 50's). There's also the Xennials (born between '75 and '85)...then the Millennials ('85 to '94). Technically, my kids are right at the cusp of being Millennials and Gen Z ('95 to 2012). Gen Alpha are any born in 2013 or later.

And yes, our current tax system is extremely complex, and flawed. A simple, stepped tax would not be a difficult thing, and has been proposed by some, but you can bet the corporations will spend millions in lobbying to save billions in taxes.

You have to be trolling here. You can't be serious. We should all just work until we keel over dead, after paying in all of our working lives? I get the feeling you would like to be the one doing nothing while someone else paid for it.

In fact, there's probably a good chance that is how you are living now. People that work hard and pay into the system bitch about how the system wont be there when its their turn, not how someone else is sucking up all the gravy.

Personally, I can't understand the allure of most people's idea of retirement. I can't imagine any time where I won't be doing some kind of productive work. Sure, it may change forms and be less hours, but I don't think we are meant to function with nothing but leisure time. I just don't think I'd be happy. I'd at least be working for myself...just not near as many hours, etc. And it would be something I enjoy doing.

At least currently, I really can't complain at all about my job. Easiest thing I've ever done, and so far, is paying the most. I like that combination....like it just fine.

I plan on having a busy retirement, I want to have the sewing business going. But I DO want to retire.

Skeeter, your posts are confusing. One minute your all about banning guns because they kill people, and being vegan because its healthy and folks will live longer, then your all about working seniors to death for your benefit.

Do you have any actual principals? In fact, are you prepping? And if so, how? Maybe you could make a post in one of the prepping threads letting us know and we could have a conversation about prepping.

Sorry if I'm confusing. I'm a complex individual I guess. I think the world is full of paradox, and I've learned to embrace paradox.

In terms of prepping, my main fear is a failure of the grid. So my concerns and prepping methods all revolve around that. I always keep $1000 cash on hand in case the grid fails, I believe stores will still take cash for a short time as debit/credit transactions will obviously not work.

I also enjoy hiking trips so the supplies I have for that (water filter, etc) would come in handy.
