Backyard Chickens

Anyone in here raising chickens? I currently have 36 and am adding 26 more to the flock this year.

Yes I am. They go great with your garden. I just added some golden comets for more egg production.

Nice, I am adding some orpingtons and some marans. Getting almost 2 dozen a day, and I'm not really a big egg fan.

Any tips guys how to start ? I don’t have a large area but planning to raise chicken for meat Incase it has to come to that.

Also how noisy are chickens? I live in a subdivision here and raising poultry is not usually welcomed but at this point no one really will stop me.

Otherwise I may decide to make a small pond for tilapia or catfish.

I have 11 chickens and they are about 100 ft away from my back door,,,,I can hear them at times in the house,,,so yeah they can be loud

Thanks Ghost, I may need to revert to my backyard catfish/tilapia plan instead.

not bad yet,,,,crazy is still down the road a ways ,,,I just hope this thing levels off soon

We have 25 egg layers and 3 ducks right now. During the summer we raise 50+ meat chickens too. We have the meat chickens, some replacement egg layer chicks and ducks on order for June delivery.
I prefer ducks over chickens for egg production. They typically lay more eggs than chickens, they're quieter, do less damage to a garden and landscaping and they lay all winter. The eggs are about 30% larger than chicken eggs too and they taste the same as chicken eggs to me.
Up untill we plant the garden the hens and ducks run loose, even in winter. The meat chickens never touch the ground, they stay confined in a small coop.
Pretty soon now I'll be confining the chickens to their coop and run. The ducks don't hurt anything so they'll continue running loose.

We've got the runner ducks right now. They are funmy looking, kind of like bowling pins. When I call them they always answer. If I'm working near the house, like I am right now on the corral, they always come up and hang around with me. At the moment they are digging through some wasted hay getting to the snow underneath.
I think the ducks the wife have on order are several different breeds.

My ducks of choice are the Khaki Campbells. They originated as a cross between Rouen, Indian Runner and mallard I believe. They are a large duck and the heaviest layers of the duck breeds. Super mild mannered also. Great at keeping down the slugs which are a problem in my gardens and yard because of large oak trees on the property. We used to put out beer for the slugs but discovered that my husbands bird dog was staying drunk all the time. Slug bait can be poisonous to dogs so next solution was ducks. Works great so far. Mine follow me around as well because I hand raised them and they are little beggars for food.

We have 2 ducks setting on about 20 eggs in the same nest. It'll be interesting to see how many hatch.
