Actually, the Kodiak is a (kind'a) sub-species of "Brown Bear" It only gets that classification because that island was detached from mainland long ago. In the guiding industry we refer to them as "Kodiak BROWN Bears". The three are Polar Bear, Black Bear, Brown Bear.

Here in montana there are two kinds of bear, the ones that eat people and the ones that don't eat people. The non hunted grizzlys are proliferating and are not afraid of mankind. They eat at least a person each year or so and maul a few as well (you won't see too much news about this since the tourist industry is very big here). The other bears have a healthy fear of man so like the one that eats the wild cherries and sniffs around our bird feeder they only come around at night and when seen in the wild they tend to disappear.

Stealth technology for bears. "It just disappeared." the man explained to the game warden.

It is my limited understanding, that Kodiak, the sub brown bear, is one of the biggest, strongest bears with 6.5 claws.
