I could ‘google’ but curious what ya all think about rice.

And yes - I listen to Dave Ramsey. I like the way he sees things, and on multiple levels. So… I get that the two are prescribed as a cheap diet. And, good for prepping, but he doesn’t go there.

I’m fine with beans, and the high protein agrees with me an my high metabolism… but the only rice I like is egg fried rice.

A few years ago I bought a 10lbs bag of rice - cheap. It went to waste.

So anyway, looking for thoughts on storing rice for a prep, and what to do with it, and what it’s good for.

Rice is the staple carb for more than a third of the world's population.

Like all staple carbs, it is cheap, nutritious, quick and fast to cook and goes well with most vegetables and protein (meats).

The people who eat rice every day, have a longer life expectancy than those in most first world nations.

Some places in rural SE Asia can harvest four rice crops a year.

If you don't like rice it is prolly because your body doesn't like it and there fore it is not a storage food. and it is getting expensive (people told me, I dislike the bleached mouse poop)
dehydrated potatoes. way better IMO

Beans and rice make a complete protein. Both have complementary proteins that combine to make a more healthy diet. The same is true with beans and any grain. I make a chicken barley stew that I put different beans in to increase the protein content. I also add corn which is a grain. If you don’t like rice find a grain that you do like. Cornbread, tortillas, or noodles, etc. are made from grain and are great complements to a bean dish. I’m diabetic so I don’t do well with much rice. I love rice but I have found other grains to go with my beans. Don’t buy a bunch of stuff that you don’t like.

Ten year old white rice shouldn’t have been tossed as it can store for at least 30 years.

you don't suppose that the redicules sugar intake of first world countries has anything to do with that??

Sure......and all the other dumb stuff first world people eat way too much of........but white rice is a staple food for many poor folks around the world.....and despite rudimentary health care, they survive to quite old age.

So my point is that, for most people, frequent white rice consumption doesn't negatively affect their life expectancy.

well rudimentry health care prolly helps with that too, because 1st world stuff is not about health
and if they live in a rice producing zone, then there bodies are prolly adapted to it.

I stock rice and proteins, among other things.

For everyday, I like the Zatarains mixes. If it hits the fan, I will make do with what's on hand.

I like noodles and whole grain breads and crackers.

I know the store bought crackers and even the breads are highly processed food now days…

I’ve been known to eat foods I don’t exactly ‘like’ but if they’re healthy and nutritious enough… yum. And btw: bring on the green tea - yum

The staple carbs in my stored food are mostly rice, pasta, whole grains and potatoes.

My staple carbs I grow are Chestnuts, potatoes and pumpkins.

Many preppers load up their food stocks with protein.....but they should understand that protein is easier to find during a severe crisis than carbs are.

A typical serve of white rice is very small and very cheap.....and requires a modest amount of energy to cook.

Stored in mylar bags with an O2 absorber, it will outlast most of us here on this forum......and it is extremely compact/space efficient

That makes it a prepping super food.

Was that a ‘dig’ on Mr Ramsey, or just sayin I shouldn’t have mentioned him?

I know… off topic

Hmm your post didn’t show for me until I quoted it. So… never mind

Edit: Ramsey is being humble when he says “doing better than I deserve”

You got it figured out!
I wonder how many of my neighbors are sitting down to this for supper tonight:

You gotta have red beans though (kidney beans).

Now I have to defrost my Spicy Andouille sausage for Thursday when Lori is farmsitting :)

Sorry, I don't have time to go through the entire thread but thought I might add some unusual facts.

1) The beans and rice do not have to be eaten together to yield protein, only within 8 hours of each other.

2) We have a large group prepared to come to our retreat location.
We have about two tons of rice stored, some at least 5 years old.
They are stored in plastic food grade 4 sq. foot containers making them rat proof.
They are outside under a open barn roof.
I tested several bags a few months ago. They are still great.
I compared cooked rice fresh and some stored. Could not tell a difference.

We store the rice in the 50 lb bags they are shipped in. No oxygen absorbants.

3) As a Prepper, you can boil about 5 minutes or so, then cover with a thick
towel to insulate it, and it will finish cooking without fuel.

4) I read an article a year ago about the army retraining their cooks how to cook again.
In prior wars, cooks received truckloads of meals ready to be prepared.
They unpacked it and cooked it.

Now they will not have rear supply depots. They will be surrounded and must live
off the land. One cook described the new cooking orders as simply "Kill something, butcher it, and serve over rice or noodles."

I mention this because rice and noodles are the cheapest calories you can buy and store long term.

5) Oh yeah, dried beans are the worst kind of beans for Preppers to store.
They require way too much fuel energy. They are fully cooked in cans.

My take on red beans, rice and sausage.
I use pinto beans because the are easier on my digestive system.
I use smoked venison sausage instead of Anduoille sausage.
I don't use green peppers because I have an intolerance to them.
I use lots of Vidalia onions, garlic, various herbs, Cajun seasoning and Louisiana Brand Hot Sauce.

I stockpile a lot of beans and rice, but I do eat it as well. My problem is I have time and money, but I also suffer from culinary laziness. An all night brisket smoke doesn't bother me because of beer and lawn chairs, but for some reason I just go out for dirty rice or red beans & rice.

rice is my favorite carb, I figured out we go through about 150 lbs of it per year. I have different kinds for different meals. Basmati for Indian, Jasmin for most other stuff, sushi medium grain rice for sushi or Korean rice bowl, yellow rice for Spanish food
We also eat beans and lentils
I have tons of recipes but don't know what you like to eat. Yesterday I made sweet and sour pork with rice

I grew up in Germany and eat rice almost every day and have no diabetes or any other food related health problems ( other than the eternal 10 lbs I can't lose but that's not from rice )

I just don't like rice, never have, And when I was eating Gluten free in the beginning wasn't watching the labels, and developed a reaction to rice flour. I just don't consider it a food for my body type, actuall everyone considering storing food to make it through tough times should have a copy of Eat right for your type, follow that by learning you physical body type. Stored food looses its enzyemes so stored digestive enzymes are a thing.
Listening to the food pryamid and anti fat group will make a person sick. unless you happen to be the blood type and body type that fits that.

well my previous German Shepherd was very allergic to rice , so I would imagine it could happen to people also

there are a ton of foods I won't eat that other people love ( like shrimp, or mushrooms) , so if you don'\t like rice, stock up on pasta instead or corn , cornbread and beans goes well also

What did I start here?!? lol

Good participation… :)

That bag of rice I mentioned in my OP was probably closer to 40lbs than 10. It took-up a fair amount of space in a broom closet. And I did buy it in case SHTF

I’m gonna have to buy more now. And I’ll know what to do with it… red beans and with sausage and some spices… I can eat that and like it.
