We tried a couple hives last year but the yellow jackets killed every bee. After talking with some local bee keepers I think we found out what we did wrong. The YJ's were able to fly directly in to the hive and overwhelme the bees. We're going to redesign the hive entrence so that the yellow jackets can't get directly in to the hive. We'll get 4 more hives for next year and try again.

AD,

Some suggestions. 1. Get a local mentor. A guy who isn't into gadgets, doing this as a hobby, and has the heart of a teacher. 2. Buy local feral bees. Not imported from CA or GA, but local bees that are in tune with your local schedule and climate.

We've never seen honey bees on our property before this spring. Is it possible that the bees in our hives took off and went feral when they were being overrun by the yellow jackets? I'm hoping that's the case.

AD, it is possible. The YJ may have run them off or may have killed them all. You never know.

Next time, reduce the entrance size, easier for the bees to defend. Search youtube for "Yellow Jacket Trap", there are some nice DIY versions that can catch 1000's of them. Also, look for 'local feral' bees to buy. They tend to be tougher and more defensive, so they have a better chance of surviving both winter and attackers.
