I always liked Pente. Where you try to get five in a row, or capture five pairs. Mine is a soft mat in a roll-up tube. I see it comes in a box rather than a tube these days. It's just little glass beads placed on a grid.

Monopoly is fun so is Squabble or Trivia. Haven't played one in about 6 years though.

You can't win a game of tic-tac-toe if both players have half a brain (actually, only 1/4 brain or less is needed to force a tie every time).

But 3D tic-tac-toe is a totally different ballgame! I don't know if it's still made, but a little plexiglass and a drill - you could make your own.

Yikes! I think that one is out of my league!😂

I grew up playing Monopoly games for days.

Something to consider would also be cards. A deck of cards can fit in a backpack and provide endless possibilities. We played whist, Canasta, and Samba growing up. My grandmother's family were avid card players. I do remember we played a little gin rummy. In college we played some fun games, long forgotten.

Our youngest daughter is a fan of Catan. The twins like it, too, and just invited the neighbor college girl over to play the other day and had a blast. A little too hard for little granddaughter, but she does enjoy Bingo and Apples to Apples. We have Farmopoly and Zombieopoly somewhere.

Set the way back machine. Does anybody remember the game of Life? Trivial Pursuit was also a favorite, and a very good one for traveling. You don't even need the board. Just take a couple boxes of cards.

It isn't a board game but Yahtzee was also a favorite, and a good one for a BOB. All you need is five dice a pencil and a sheet of paper.

Chess, Backgammon and Cribbage are some of my favorites.

Cribbage can be played without the board, just need pencil, paper and a deck of cards. 15 for 2, lol.

This is a card game that was popular when I was in college.

Slap card game

"Not a game for the tired or sensitive, Slaps is a high-intensity card game best for 4 to 8 people. ... land on top of one another, or a sandwich is made (think 7, King, 7), players should slap the pile as fast as possible. The first player to slap gets the deck, and the person to collect the whole deck in the end, wins."

Re: Risk and the Ukraine

Trying to defend the Ukraine is like trying to clear a yellow jackets nest with a fly swatter. You may win a battle or three but your rear is always getting stung.

Ben
That kind of sounds like Pandemic. Either you spend all your turns trying to find cures for the diseases and the epidemics overwhelm you, or you try to contain the epidemics but you can't find the cures. It's very difficult. But it's fun to try...

I was never much for board games. When we were young and broke newlyweds 30 years ago we did jigsaw puzzles. We would buy 1 on payday, put it together then trade with the neighbors.
I did play acey deucey in the Navy.
For all you landlubbers. :)
Acey-deucey - Wikipedia
Wife and I play acey deucy when we go camping. Or play Skip Bo

Monopoly (national park monopoly, Millennial monopoly...)

Card games

If we were in a situation where we needed some entertainment and were tired of board games/cards, we'd read out loud to each other. We haven't done that for a few years, but we read together as a family even DS#3 was still a teenager, and DH and I read to each other now. We've all loved anything by Gary Paulsen, or anything in that genre.
