The increase in activity of the madman in NK makes me realize that I have been lax in thinking about extreme situations, i.e. a nuke landing. To that end, I would like to know the quickest/cheapest way to dig a hole 40' deep, 20' long and about 10' wide. What kind of machinery is needed?

40' deep? without a ramp you would need at a minimum that is similar to a 318 cat backhoe, anything smaller you ain't going down 40' without a ramp. Hope you planing on running timber on the sides or concrete. I would personally use a 180 deer with outriggers.

you don't need to be that deep,,,,20 will do the trick and if it is just radiation 3ft of soil over your head will be enough

20 ft is the bottom of your shelter putting 10 ft of soil over your head anything over the first 3 ft is just over kill in my opinion,,,what are the chances of being inside the immediate blast area of a nuclear blast,not that great we are striving to survive fallout and radiation,that is the threat almost all of us face if they ever push the little red button
