I think bugging in and bugging out both have a place in emergency planning, and, if anything, prepping should be about flexibility and options.

I live in a suburban environment, but can be in an agricultural/somewhat rural area in less than an hour. I also have the Everglades to retreat to.

Mostly, I plan on bugging in because I have wild foods growing all over the place in the community, canals, I have stored water and weapons, sliding metal shutters for hurricanes, and so on.

A siege mentality, though, usually leads to defeat over time...but I'm not prepping for a long, protracted urban warfare scenario.

Which path I take depends on what the catastrophy is.

There are too many factors to consider for any ONE plan to be right for all. Age, medical condition, physical condition, transportation methods, skill sets needed, and these are just a very limited number of factors. There are many more that have to be considered and prioritized. For me, the choice is to stay. I will be the Gray Man as long as possible and fight if required. I will just hope it won't be Custer's Last Stand.

I honestly think bugging out would normally be my last choice. The thought of traveling during an emergency is not pleasant. Even in short term evacuations I’ve seen traffic blocked for miles. Give that just a few more days and people get hungry and thirsty, and start to loose their common decency when they see their children suffering. I won’t say I would never bug out though. Every situation is different and you just do your best to be aware of what is going on and evaluate the risk vs reward of any actions. I hope things continue on as is in my lifetime, but know they will change at some point. I’ve had some ask why I prep as I do if I’m probably going to be dead in 15 or twenty years anyway, or before anything happens. It is to give my kids a better chance down the road of course.

If you leave your home your place is an easy target. We have everything we need right here and also live stock that depends on us. Just yesterday our hiefer had a calf that they both need training on the nursing process. That calfs survival depends on us right now. I can not leave and will not. That is just how I am.

We have a variety of preserved and fresh foods and the ability to grow more along with access to water even if it stops flowing thru the pipes and the electricity is cut off to the well. Every family should be prepared to live on their own means even if it is just temporary. During Harvey we saw both the ones who were determined to do just that, but many who couldn't because of the floods and then others who took everything they could handed to them. Just thankful we chose a high enough elevation that our house was good and we built the barns in the highest spots in the pastures so the animals were all able to stay out of the flood waters.

I plan on staying right where I am. I've got just about everything I need to survive here. About the only thing that would force me out of here is a forest fire. Even then I'd probably just go to another part of the property and wait it out.

I'm planning and prepping to bug in, bugging out is my last option and prepared to do so if need be, I would prefer to do some things different on both the bug in location and bug out locations but a lot of us ain't alone in our choices, women and kids needs to be taken into account before any decision is made, our home's here on the property are far better prepared to deal with a crises than the bugout locations.

Planning on bugging in as I have everything I need at my location. Evacuation orders just came in 30 minutes from my location due to aggressive forest fires causing me to prepare my bug out supplies in case the fires come into my area. My friend just lost a 10 acre garden loaded with produce in central BC due to no sunlight and preparing his livestock for evacuations. Smoke is so thick up there at 10am it’s as dark as 2am possibly forcing him into fleeing from the area with the 85000 hectare fire heading straight for him.

1 Hectare equals 107639 sq. ft. There are roughly 2 1/2 acres in a hectare.

Ya up here they can’t make up there mind on measurements property size goes by acres but when it comes to reporting on fires they go hectares. Pick one and stick with it.
