Speaking of dog food- do any of you can dog food?

I've thought of canning some for our beasts but I have never done it. I make them food fairly often when I have unusable meats for whatever reason. We buy kibble, too, but of course they love it when I make them food.
I can ground turkey which is primarily for my border collies (i.e. dog food)..I know some here will poo pooh that...and likely think I'm nuts and that's ok...

That's ONE ingredient I feed them..as well as chicken liver, gizzards and a variety of veggies, like carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, and they get scrambled eggs too, as well as brown rice and a smaaall amount of dry dog food for calories.

I don't think that answered your exact question..but to me, the ground turkey I can is dog food as well as people food...simply because that's what I feed me border collies.

That's good stuff. It's to labor intensive for me. I feed my dogs an inexpensive high protein dry food and add a scoop of Dinovite. I'll add scraps of un seasoned food and chicken eggs. One of my dogs is 18 years old this year.

I got my 9 pints of ground beef canned this weekend but didn't get to the tallow...I had too many other chores to do...laundry and started spring cleaning, and put winter stuff away...(we've had essentially no winter to speak of this year)..I did split up another 10 pound ground beef on Sunday I made into hamburger patties and vacuum sealed for freezer...but that's not canning...so ignore

I don't find that crazy at all. I love all my furry pups and treat them like I would IF I still had kids here at home. I'll admit that I do not can especially for them. They will just have to eat what we do. But trust me they will be taken care of. Maybe one day they will even bring home food for me. 🤣

That makes sense to me. I do feed them our food whenever I make meat.

Our pups had dinovite for awhile. The old man lost interest after awhile. It worked, though!

I know this is a canning thread. But since it has turned to dog food…..

My wife being a specialist vet figures a lot out about the animal from the history. We do get a discount on 1 of the top 3 dog food manufacturers, but she has to periodically take a training course on nutrition. Honest disclaimer.
I mix a RC feed and a P feed for my dogs. Never scraps or people food.

Feeding homemade, table scraps, takes a lot out her ability to diagnose a problem. She always says that the company that brings her the most business is the one one that spends their $ on marketing. You all can figure out what BB is.

One client had an issue because of all the snack treats made by a famous chicken company. My wife found out afterwards, that that’s all the client was feeding the dog. That famous chicken company paid the dogs bill before she found out this fact.

You’all can do what you want. But if your dog is ill, and you want THAT dog, Find a very qualified professional Vet that needs to know the nutrition going into it Is.

Back to canning.

Not silly at all! I cook chicken for our dogs for dinner and eggs, wheat toast and a bit of sausage (fat removed with paper towels) for breakfast...as well as the recommended dog food from our vet.

The chicken is done in the InstantPot. Naturally any fat is not used and skin, bones are removed.

Now you can laugh at me.

Thank you for the information. I have been advised by our vet to feed RC, but we can't afford it.

My thoughts were more on what to feed if SHTF and we can't get dog food. We don't eat a lot of meat. (Or, rather, I don't eat a lot of meat and the meat my husband cooks he won't feed to the dogs!)

When I make the dogs food, I follow a recipe with meat, peas, rice, and such. You can't can that due to the rice.

Anyway, I really appreciate the insight!

Squirrel, mice, birds, etc.. Sweet potato, carrots, peas, green beans etc.. Boil it all. Save the water for them to drink.

Can it with just the meat, peas and whatever else and then add in the cooked rice at feeding time. Just a suggestion.

I managed to get 6 quarts of beef and 7 pints of tomatoe sauce canned this past weekend, and after work today I got 6 pints worth of chicken canned. I've got a ham I'm going to can tomorrow evening after work. This weekend I think I'm going to can up different stuff..like orange juice, oranges, maybe some other fruit...not sure yet. I'm trying to get some stuff canned through the weekdays now after work (when I'm able), in addition to canning and other storage on the weekends.

Been trying new stuff... "Re-canning" I re-canned 6 pints of tomatoe sauce (water bath) and 18 pints of orange juice today...first time I've done that, except the last 7 pints of tomatoe sauce were "recanned" last week. I got a good deal on 106 oz. Can of tamatoe sauce and some orange juice on sale...I steam canned the orange juice in pressure canner...I've got 2 more 106 oz. Cans of tomatoe sauce I'm going to break down and recan in pints. The 15 oz. Cans of tomatoe sauce (off brand), here are about $1.79/$1.89 a can...I got 6 pints out of the 106 oz. Can which was $4.99 ...i'll take it! I don't mind the work and generally won't use 106oz can at one time anyway. Praying for good tomatoes this year, but in the interim, this works for me.

That long works for me...1-2 years is what I was hoping for...we don't drink much store bought orange juice anyway..I just wanted to try out recanning it....not a priority item for me to can...likely will not can another pint of it. I WILL can some fresh oranges hopefully, but the store bought juice...I don't really care about anyway..

I did some fresh oranges, cantaloupe and honeydew in a light syrup a few years ago. Seems like the instructions were come up to 10lbs pressure and let it run a couple minutes and shut off, maybe? I had many failed jars.

If you find a better recipe let me know!!

Canning chicken this morning..I normally can chicken in pint jars but I have 7 quart jars going this morning..

I think I'm going to gather a bunch of my fresh herbs today and put in dehydrater, then store them in my 2 oz. Jars

Have not heard of doing that. Will look for how to can them as we have a vineyard. 👍
Let us know how it goes if we still have internet by then! My grapes are still babies, so I won't be doing it this year.

Another thing I learned and RC&D reminded me- mulberry trees have edible leaves that can be used like grape leaves. They don't taste as good, but they're high in calcium and iron. This website states:

"One of the most amazing characteristics that can only be found in the mulberry leaf is an ingredient known as moranoline (1-Deoxynojirimycin / 1-DNJ). This incredible compound inhibits an enzyme in the intestinal tract involved in the digestion of carbohydrates.

Moranoline or 1-DNJ holds back complex carbohydrates, starches, maltose and sucrose from breaking down into glucose. In essence, it actually prevents sugar from entering into the bloodstream. This is what makes it incredibly powerful for blood sugar."

I didn't get to herbs today but I canned 8 pints of carrots and threw in a pint of frozen corn to make even 9 pints for the canner...between that n 7 quarts of chicken today..I feel pretty good about it..."baby steps" each weekend!

Going to dehydrate green oinions..I am covered up in green onions right now. Also got a big pack of chicken legs n thighs on sale, so, going to can up some bone in chicken today ...I canned 22 quarts of tomatoes cple weeks ago after buying 50 lb of tomatoes..now I'm covered up in tomatoes from our garden of various sizes..guess I'll have to squeeze in time for more tomatoe sauce this week too. Happy to have it to do though.
