At least 40 shot and 4 killed in one night of Chicago gun violence

At least 40 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend during the seven hours from midnight Saturday to early Sunday morning, with four fatalities, city police said on Sunday, a stark violent streak in a city where authorities say gun violence has been decreasing this year.

"These were both random and targeted shootings on our streets," said Fred Waller, Chief of the Patrol Division of the Chicago Police Department, in a press conference.

He said most of the shootings are connected to gang violence in the city of about 2.7 million people, the third-largest in the United States.

Police said gunmen targeted a block party, a gathering after a funeral, and other gatherings on a night where thousands of people gathered for a downtown concert.

Local media reported that the brunt of the violence happened in the city's West Side, where 25 people were shot in separate attacks.

Waller touted that shootings in 2018 were down from last year.

The Chicago Tribune, which has been tracking shooting statistics, reported earlier this month that shootings in the city have declined, with 533 fewer shootings as of Aug. 1 than the same time in 2017.

"By no means do these statistics show that we have a victory," Waller said.

He said that police are working with other law enforcement groups to target gang activity.

"I promise we will not be defeated," Waller said.

More specifics on the shootings were not immediately available late on Sunday.

Florida armed bystander stops gunman at crowded back-to-school event at park

An armed bystander shot a man who opened fire at a Florida park filled with over 100 people -- including children -- for a Saturday back-to-school cookout, officials said.

The Titusville Police Department said in a news release the man was involved in a fistfight with another person at the Issac Campbell Park and left around 5:20 p.m. -- only to return with a gun minutes later and start shooting.

A bystander, who was lawfully licensed to carry a firearm, then shot the gunman.

“We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident,” Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson said in a statement. “This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park. This could have been so much worse.”

The gunman, whose firearm was recovered at the scene, was airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured during the shootout.

A DJ whose family organized the event at the park told Florida Today he was standing under a pavilion when he heard at least a dozen shots ring out.

Dwight Harvey was streaming the event live on his Facebook page when the shooting started. Children and parents could be seen in the video going through supplies when the shots suddenly rang out, WFTV reported.

“I was like, who lit firecrackers? I turned around and just said, ‘Oh no, he’s got a gun, he’s got a gun,’” Harvey told the newspaper.


Harvey told the news outlet he was thankful the bystander was in the right place at the right time to quickly end what could have been an even worse situation.

“This was standing your ground, in a situation like this with kids involved; not what you saw in Clearwater -- that was murder,” Harvey told Florida Today, referring to a controversial shooting last month over a handicapped parking space that's sparked protests.

The bystander who shot the suspect waited for officers and has been fully cooperative with the investigation, police said. Neither the shooter nor the bystander have been identified.

Matthews said no charges are expected to be filed against the bystander, as his actions were "within the law based on the preliminary investigation."

You have to place the concerns of your constituents first!
Now if you look at the tragic case in Florida that Shooter mentioned. A perfectly good gunman had his rights to shoot up a crowd violated by the bystander.
This kind of senseless violence against perfectly good criminals must STOP!!!

CHICAGO — At least 74 people were shot in one of the most violent weekends of the year in Chicago, spurred by a 7-hour period early Sunday morning when 40 people were shot.

Between 3 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday morning, 11 people were killed and 63 people were wounded, according to Tribune data. Their ages spanned from 11 to 62 years old, and most of those shot were attacked on the South and West sides.

As of Friday, at least 1,700 people have been shot in the city this year, fewer than the last two years at this time when violence hit record levels in the city but well above other recent years. There have been at least 300 homicides, according to Tribune data.

Just like the human body, made up of different parts, colors, shapes & functions. If you have a bad tooth which is one part of the body, sooner or later if you don't correct it, that tooth is gonna affect the entire body! Your butt is gonna hurt and feel miserable because of that one little tooth!

Here's an idea: give the citizens back the guns that your stupid gun laws took away from them and tell them "if you see a carload of gang-members driving by, shooting out of the car, SHOOT BACK!!!"
That problem would come to a screeching halt (car pun).

Edit: The problem is simple. The bad-guys have absolutely no fear of being arrested. They have no fear of citizens shooting back (because they are the law-abiding unarmed people), so why not shoot the town up every night?

I completely agree. The only thing running amuck in that city is the complete fruition of liberal ideology.
As Shooter's second post shows, it only took one "bystander" with rights in Florida to shut that **** completely down.
You are right about it requiring an external remedy to fix Chi-town because the police are basically protecting the gang members.
It would be cool to see the gang-member's car slide around the corner after a drive-by only to find the road blocked by one of these:
