I disagree here. Granted, there hasn't been a strong one for over a hundred years now, but it's like rolling dice. One day a big one will hit again. Our grid is more susceptible to it than most know. Without reliable electricity for a year or more this country would be hurt badly. Sure, some of us in the country would do fine, but can you imagine a place like Manhattan? Most of the buildings aren't usable without electricity. It is hard to imagine people having to cook over a wood fire on the sidewalk in any large city.I don't worry about CMEs,,,,,I don't think they are a real threat,,,,come on it's not going to shut anything down for good,,,,,they are more aggravation than a end of times situation
I think that realistically DIRECT inpacts on the ground from a CME are rare, BUT In space you could see some pretty serious **** hit the hundreds of comms and GPS and Radio /TV Satelites which would take quite a while to sort out especially as many of them now are no longer built with maneuvering thrusters. So PHONES, GPS, TELECOMS, INTERWEB etc could take a hammering. On a lesser scale many radio frequencies used by Amateurs could be f--ked up for days.
That's only from low level ones that don't hit the ground. There are huge bursts that are capable of major damage, we just haven't been in line with one for a long time. Let's just hope it will be a few thousand more years before it happens again.now there it is f-ed up for days not weeks not months or years,,,,,just days,,,,,no worse than a severe storm,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe not as bad
that's the problem, most of the population ARE ignorant of the possibilities. they are the paranoid ones, preppers are the only sane people.sometimes I think we are to paranoid for our own good,,,,,what is that old saying ignorance is bliss,,,or is it,,,,what you don't know won't hurt you,,,,,,,,,,,,back before 1900 we would not even be talking about any of this,,,all the advancements man has made has created most of what we are prepping for,,,,,
now there it is f-ed up for days not weeks not months or years,,,,,just days,,,,,no worse than a severe storm,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe not as bad
Another Carrington event is possible......Mostly what blows things like this out of proportion is the Doomsayers who make ridiculous predictions predicated on fear and money....Its a lot like some religions who tell you to send your money to the lord but give you their address...WTH!
Yup theres money to be made from FEAR Doom mongering and gun sales , prepping, off gridding, etc
Fear and sex are the two biggest motivators for you to spend your money on. Why do you think some people work their butts off and become millionaires? It's to have sex with better women!
Absolutely. And just like rolling the dice, it's a mathematical certainty that any given combination WILL happen at some point. And, one day, we WILL get hit with a massive, Carrington class or even "kill shot" type CME. (and no, that doesn't necessarily mean it kills all life on Earth)Granted, there hasn't been a strong one for over a hundred years now, but it's like rolling dice. One day a big one will hit again
Even at 93million miles away, the sun is so powerful. It you read any of the doomsday books about cme/emp's then you realize we should all be at least somewhat concerned about these events.
Agreed that you can't do too much against a major event. I do think mitigating your dependence for electricity from the grid is wise though. The sun is only one potential cause of the grid going down.Concerned? Sure. But other than some basic EMP stuff, not really much to do for it. If it happens, nothing we are going to do will stop it.
