When the draft ended, and the Army went to all volunteer in 1974, what was called Basic Combat Infantry Training when I was in simply became Basic Training and got soft.
When basic became co-ed it got really soft.

My Drill Sergeants in D-3-1 at Fort Gordon in 1968 would probably be court martialed and receive a General Discharge in 2024.

They forgot to tell my Drill Sergeants they was supposed to go soft on us.

We were lined up to sign a document holding the Navy harmless if we were killed during basic. I will skip " Happy Hour" and that torture.

Klinger was trying for a Section 8 but was not transgender. After Rader left the show Klinger became company clerk and a regular soldier which based on my experiences is usually what happened with those trying for a Section 8.

Same here. Interestingly enough most young men White or otherwise cannot pass any type of physical which is another reason we are short manpower.

I agree. 2 years of compulsory full time military service plus 4 years as a reservist. I am even okay with creating an option for objectors called America-Corps where you clean ditches, fill pot holes, mow public grass and take care of older people, disable people and the elderly - especially veterans - by mowing, shoveling, grocery shopping, cleaning house, etc.

I know a man who went into the army more than 20 years ago and was released. I didn't realize that they released people who were not fit. I believe that he was released because he smoked a lot of pot. I would have imagined that they would have given him more duties, more fitness, more pain in the pattootie stuff.

Back during Vietnam people who could not qualify for enlistment were drafted into the Army as McNamara's Morons.

I'm willing to concede slave to involuntary indentured servitude as involuntary indentured servitude is a contract and does have an ending date whereas slave usually does not.

Compulsory military service isn't slavery, it's serving your nation in a manner that demonstrates a deep appreciation for the rights and freedoms it provides you. Rights and freedoms that were earned by the very lives of Americans who served and died before you.

I am all for a 3rd option though. Military service, America-corps or a plane ticket to another country. I hear Ukraine is nice.

Nations have been drafting their citizens into the military forever. That's how you protect your country. People that think we shouldn't be doing this are idiots IMHO. Of course we want to avoid wars, but we have to be ready for them none the less. You can't be ready for a war with an unstaffed military. Nobody wants to be forced into the military and potentially have to put their life on the line, but that's the way the world works. People do it, and even volunteer for it, for the most part because of a sense of duty and pride (the normal, traditional kind of pride). An all-volunteer military is a nice sounding idea, but I think it's probably an idea that would fail in a large scale war. Just not enough soldiers to do what is needed. That's where the draft comes in, like it or not.
