I’ve been browsing Craigslist website lately, looking at various things for sale. The nasty trolls must be bored because they’re even attacking that site. The general scam seems to be “I’m in the military. Getting stationed far away. I need to sell X item, cheap. You send the money and I’ll ship the item through e-Bay. Guaranteed 5 day trial before I get paid.”

Craigslist warns about this type of long distance deal and 3rd party venture.

I agree that most of the scams are easy to spot. Basically, I’m not going to pay a company in Las Vegas that has buyers in my area to help me sell my item and if you can’t come to me with cash for any reason I don’t want to waste my time. I will say that close to 50% of the responses now are some sort of scam now....

I sold my brother's old car that he left with me when he moved (as payment for money I had lended him) on Craigslist earlier this year. I got a lot of scam responses before I found a genuine buyer.

The scammers are out in full force on Craigslist. From what I can discern, their knowledge and use of the English language is limited, and their cover story of being in the US military is easily disproved.

Lots of times I will get a call within minutes of posting the ad. If they can’t come to look at the item for any reason I just hang up. I do still use it fairly often to get rid of stuff bu tits sad to think of how many first timers are likely ripped off out there.

I buy stuff on Ebay, I only buy books on Amazon as anything else could be from China and you have to look hard to find out, so its books only.
we have something else locally called Freecycle which I have used several times and I've used Gumtree a couple of times, but most times its Ebay I use more than any other site.

there is a easy way to avoid these scams,,,,before you pay for it have it in your hands,,,,,never send someone money for something you don't have yet

Craigslist is almost dead because of the unsuperized crap >>> been a crook avenue forever - good chance it's a scam or seeking an opportunity to rob someone ....

There was a case in Georgie a while back where a guy posted an expensive rare car, I believe a mustang, and when The older couple came to look at it they were robbed and murdered. Luckily the scumbag was caught but that didn’t help the murdered couple. So, if meeting for a valuable item don’t go to remote areas. Lots of police stations have parking lots that you can meet at, or any busy public place is a good idea. I like to meet at a bank branch as I can get the cash if buying after I see the item. If selling I can deposit the cash immediately and not carry it around.

Our local police station has a "safe zone" in the parking lot for craigs list transactions. Just a few spots in the parking lot that are marked with signs and on video surveillance 24/7. There's no one actively monitoring the cameras at all times but it's still pretty good as far as a deterrent to committing any kind of crime. That's where I met the ladies who bought the car.

I sold a dune buggy on Craigslist. I made sure that I was packing my 9mm when the buyer showed up, I never turned my back on him and I had my wife keep an eye on us from the safety of the house.
