I have made several bows from 1/2" pvc pipe that makes it a 20 lbs pull weight, and made 3/4" pvc that makes a 40 lbs pull weight. I have made roughly 10 or so, sold about half of them, still have a few more to sell. This is a very inexpensive way to make your own bow. The link below is a long list of bowyer's. Watch "Backyard Bowyer's" video's. That is how I learned. One thing to keep in mind is patience. Be very patient with it. You might mess up the first one or second one as I did, but keep at it, and it becomes easier. There are video's on how to make arrows also using dowel and duck tape. I use 3/8" Oak dowel, and cut 3 - 4 pieces of 3" duct tape for the feathers. Oh I even made a 80 lbs pull weight using 1 1/4" pvc, I have yet to be able to string it ha ha. Enjoy, and have fun :)

I forgot to mention you can make a bow for $10.00 or less depending on the string you buy, and actually use it to hunt.

I have done this and actually built mine from the 1 1/4 as well. I'll tell ya it took me and my father to string that puppy!! LOL We have several made as well all in different sizes right down to a really small one made for our three year old, only thing with her arrows we didn't give them points. My eldest daughter is 15 and scared of most weapons the sound bothers her. But within 10 mins of teaching her posture, she can aim and shoot with a custer area staying within 6 inchs.

How did you and your father string the 80 lbs bow? I would really like to get this thing strung so I can test it to sell, or keep it.

Ok.... work boots are a must. He sat in the chair with one end against the instep of his boot. and held right around the middle so when I started it wouldnt fling itself back. Then I took the top and began to bend it in towards him. once it was down so far Dad took his free hand and strung the string. Yes that does sound simple when looking at it.......BUT it isnt and took almost a half hour with little breather break in between. Might take less if it was bigger stronger people. I only weigh 130 lbs and dad is 67 weighing in at 140.

Sorry not towards him I mean to the side as I stood along side him.

Thanks for the info, I actually found a way. It does require two people. Lean it against the counter, corner is better, one person holding the string to string the bow, and hold the bow. The other person puts there foot in the center "handle area" and push down. I was able to string mine this way with very little effort, but of course I made the string to long ha ha.

how long till your proficient enough with the bow to be able to hunt with it

I have not really been practicing enough lately, but the last shot I hit bulls eye.. first time ever ha ha. I've been concentrating so much on my gun lately, and not sure I will even keep any of them. That is if I can sell them all. If not I will keep the 80 lbs, and 1 40 lbs. Then I will practice more. I bought some targets in hope I could shoot my gun in my own yard, but stupid gun laws tells me I otherwise. Gee at least I can shoot my bow in the yard.

We have the book by the same guy. My hubby has worked a little with it but other projects, I think temporarily deterred him from making much more than a prototype. (He's been working on rehabilitating a scorpion style ballista and a small trebuchet that he was given) I wanted to test the horse bow styles in the book versus mine from Hungry and see if there was much difference. Our concern was that the plastic will become brittle eventually.
