Not sure where I need to post this, but I am currently signed up to this site to rescue farm critters, but they also have dogs and other animals.

http://www.rescueme.org/

It is USA nation wide for animals that need a good home. There is no cost. . .just go and pick up. I am listed with the Farm Animals and most of these have been pets to someone who just can not keep them anymore. I just picked up one on Sunday. The owners had their land basically sold out from underneath them and they had 12 dogs, 20 goats and 2 horses to find a good home to before the end of the month. I signed up for my state and the neighboring one since I live close to the boarder . Just thought I would pass it on. Most of these have been very well cared for, but not all. . . You just need to look them over and decide.

What a great idea! So do you have a herd of goats now? I'm still working on the barn/shelter area and am not done on the fencing yet. With all the projects I have going it will probably be next spring before I'll have the right setup to give them a good home. I did have some new additions though. The eggs in the incubator started hatching yesterday. Last night there were 7 chicks out, I had 48 eggs in there. I will let you know of the hatch rate in a day or so. Glad to see you post again, kind of missed you!

Well, I am sure the site will still be there whenever you are ready and depending on your state you may have more luck finding what animal you are looking for. The guy Sunday had all dwarfs and that is just not something I would want to add to my heard, so I still only have my 17, which I guess you can call a small goat heard. Baby chicks are so fun to watch when first born. When we started our coop, we purchased 2 day old hatchlings thru the mail. Placed them in a plastic swimming pool in the house with a heat lamp until they were old enough to go outside. Hope you enjoyed your vacation and got all your projects done.

Hey goat hearder! Only 17, no wonder it's tough to get away. So, you stunk up your house too? It's amazing how much those little guys can stink! I'll keep them inside for a couple weeks and then move them out, but will wait a while before introducing them to the 16 other hens. I have 8 duck eggs, due in about three weeks, and am wondering if they will get along with the hens. We will see. I would have enjoyed the time off more if I had gone somewhere, but yes I got a lot done. Kelly is pretty sick with kidney issues so we can't travel. I still have mountains of mud piled up that was just too slippery to spread out. I'll have to get a small bobcat here to spread it out after it dries out some. Oh well, at least the ponds look great and I have the storm shelter dug out as well. It's so beautiful here, spring is my favorite time of the year, with everything coming back to life. All the trees are blooming and the leaves are coming in. I've lived in the south most of my life where there's always something green during winter. I went to manhattan once in the winter, and although amazing, I was struck by how grey and dead everything looked. It was really neat to see the place, it's amazing how much you recognize from tv and pictures, but once was enough for me. Way too big and busy. Hope your all well, Brent.

Sorry to hear about your wife. . . I hope and pray that she will get better. I have to say I was looking forward to the day the chicks could finally go out, but we ended up keeping them inside for about a month. I had one chick that I hatched from an incubator about 10 years back and kept it in a cage in the house. Hunny was the one who wanted it out and way too soon then it should have gone out with the others. Poor thing got pecked to death so be careful introducing your babies into others. He did it while I was at work since he knew I would have told him not yet. Have had luck with fencing off a small portion of the current coop to place the newbies (at least 6 weeks old, the older the better so that they can protect and defend themselves) in so that they are introduced in 'their' area and they can get a feel for each other and try to sort out their pecking order. Do that for about a week or so, no sooner. I would also suggest introducing them into the flock at night when they are cooped up. They tend to be more docile at that time. Make sure to give them something to do as soon as they wake up and get active by placing something new food wise into the coop that will keep them busy and not so interested in the newbies or even just let them free range. Just introduce your ducks the same way. I have a neighbor right now that keeps his duck in with his chicken and so far they have been doing well together, but they were raised together. I also had a friend growing up whose mom kept chickens and ducks together, but I really don't know how she introduced them together. We're talking Jr High and honestly I could have cared less.

Thanks, we are going to see the kidney surgeon tomorrow. These chicks are only 4 days old and are allready starting to stink! Ill get them out into a seperate cage in the chicken pen shortly. I didn't have any problems introducing the last 14, I just waited till they were big enough to run from the older girls. I also kept the rooster seperated for a little while too. I got 9 birds this go round, and a 10th that has a deformed leg. I found a person that will take it, as they have one allready that they keep seperate from the other birds. I think it may have been more humane to let it die, but they said they will look after it. I still have about two weeks for the ducks, but am interested in seeing how they turn out.
