$190 million gone forever? Crypto boss dies with passwords needed to unlock customer accounts

Customers of a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange are reportedly unable to access $190 million of funds after the company’s founder died with the passwords needed to access the money.

Gerald Cotten, the 30-year-old founder of QuadrigaCX, died due to complications with Crohn’s disease, according to Sky News, citing Cotten’s wife, Jennifer Robertson. The executive reportedly passed away in December while traveling in India to open an orphanage.

Jeeze!!!

This is what I've been saying all along. Cryptos can go *POOF* in a heartbeat and disappear forever.

I have a BitCoin wallet that I can no longer access. It doesn't have any BitCoins in it, so it's not a big deal other than the fact that it can happen.

For that kind of money, somebody will find a way to break the password. Contact the Mossad, bet for a sizable donation, they can find a way. They won't show them how it was done but will give them the password.

When you get down to it no investment is 100% safe, even govt backed money. Look at Venezuela right now. Their paper notes are worth more as paper than as money.... just don’t think it could never happen here. Having a mix of investments is smart, but hey, if you have enough left to use as an investment then you’re lucky allready. Most of the world lives day to day.

I never trusted this crypto currency BS. I'll stick with real money, and government notes.

It's all just notes, either on paper or digitally.

I've got a little invested in crypto (just playing around money, nothing serious in it), in case it ever takes off again, but chances are that the opportunity has long passed. The concept has a lot of potential, but the adoption I think, is going to take a LOT more time than folks originally thought.
