In a cabin, on a mountain, in "Wilderness" Alaska.
It is all in the title. You wake up blind or splash something toxic in your eyes, you find the phone, is there any know way to dial 9-11.....???

On my phone the lower right button is star key. There is also 9 buttons above the key pad.

The 9 and the 1 are in opposite corners, lower right is 9 and upper left is 1. All you have to do is find the keypad.

I remember way-way back when you had to have the operator dial any number that was not on your partyline. gee I'll bet some are wondering "What is a Partyline"....???

"What is a Partyline"....???

I remember. Pick up the phone and someone be jabberin', lol.

As far ass 911 I never gave that much thought. I guess it would take some memory of where the digits are at.

I live in a small village, total population 11 humans and 38 Grizzly Bears. Our phones are out of service often, and often for a week or more, recently ten days. No cell phone service here. The last time I needed 9-11, I had to put a note in the mailbox, for the mailman to call 9-11, three days later two ambulances were at the bottom of my mountain.

About two weeks ago I woke with sudden blindness. It went away after an hour. So, I have been puzzling about how to dial the phone.

Apple’s IOS 11 operating system allows users to tap the sleep/wake button five times to contact emergency services.

Something like that is why I started this thread. Thought maybe there was a known trick, like press the star key 5 or 10 times.

I thought everybody with a smartphone just 'told' the phone who to call?
"Call Karen".
I thought being suddenly blinded would be the only time 'voice-control' would be useful, but I forgot about 'lazy'.

Wow, about the only thing I can think of is to somehow mark 9 and 1 on the keypad so you can feel it.

Maybe glue something on there or dimple it with a soldering iron something along those lines.

Every 911 dispatcher phone has a 10 digit phone number attached to it. When someone dials 911 the call is automatically switched to the number that responds to the area from whence the landline or cell tower is in.

I don't know if your sat-phone has speed dial. If it does you can acquire the 10 digit number for 911 and put it in your speed dial. I don't believe that dialing 911 on a sat-phone will work as there is no way to identify where you are.

Dog wants a walk, be back with another answer shortly.

I have a "Land Line" phone service, but I have a special Hearing-impaired phone.

Place your phone on driving mode and just say, "call 911"

I have never had a cell phone. No service in this area.

Okay, in your situation I recommend a marine EPIRB. Here are a few.

Better yet, do you have one left over from your flying days? I bet you know how to buy one. This would get them looking for a plane and if combined with a strobe should get you attention. These will work without cell, landline, or any electricity.

An SSB and decent antenna would get you out to someone that could relay your call. The radio people live to respond to emergencies, whether you have a license or not.

The old manual keypads had bumps on the keys for the blind. Not sure if there was a standard.

This keypad...

Has raised bars on the "5". Down one and to the right for "9" then up one to the left for "1".

This is an excellent topic. Assuming you only have a smart phone with a glass screen and no tactile reference point, how to get your phone to make a call is important if you cannot see. I'm going to be looking into this. Thanks, Sourdough, for the food for thought.

How to Call 911 Using Siri
The following voice commands can be used with Siri to dial 911:

  1. “Hey Siri, call 911”
  2. “Hey Siri, call an ambulance”
  3. “Hey Siri, call emergency services”
  4. “Hey Siri, dial 911”
Following your command, Siri will respond that it’s “Calling Emergency Services in five seconds.” This gives you a chance to cancel the call if it was unintentional.

I might get another PLB. I'll wait till my life is remodeled this spring/summer.

What is SIRI,,,,,,,???

i can not see the buttons on the phone to be able to dial---but i have 911 on speed dial, #1., #2 is my closest neighbor, #3 is my other closest neighbor in case #2 is out. the top row of buttons are easy for me to find. little bump dot stickers are a help also

This actually happened to an acquaintance of mine. She woke up in the middle of the night, and thought she was putting eye drops in her eyes, and got a healthy dose of nail polish remover instead. Fortunately her husband rushed her to the hospital and she was O.K., but things like that can happen. She might not have been so lucky if she was alone.
