I'm looking for a new watch dog since 2 of mine have disappeared. What kind of dogs do you have? I need one good with kids, cats, dogs, chickens and goats. I don't need another roamer. My pyranease (sp?) Mix was a roamer and just went missing last weekend after having him for a year. So I need something that is protective/loyal that will stay at home. Any suggestions?

Hello Aimol, first you need to make a list with all the things you want in your dog. You said you dont want your dog to roam, how big is your property? Yard fenced or all open? Do you need him to tend and protect cattle, sheep ?

If this dog is strickly for protection do you have small children that will be around this dog?

I am no expert, just things I thought of. Me personally the best dog I had was an American Bulldog! She was a great judge of character, no joke. When I was dating and had the gent come to my house the first time I told them my dog had to approve or date was over. Let her in the house and more than once her hair went up and she chased the guy around dining room table before I could grab her! Did the same when dating my now husband, she came in went right to his feet and layed on her back with legs wide open! No kidding, been married 10 yrs now.

This dog would let neighbor kids crawl all over her, she did try to take my friends horse down was the first time she ever saw one! She liked to chase squirrels and deer. She has without warning pinned 2 other dogs after they ran through our yard and we were standing in driveway.

Ok, she was awesome, had to put my girl to sleep due to cancer. When I get over her I will get another American bull. If your interested there are 2 types of this breed. Standard and Johnson
One bigger and many use to hunt wild bore!

Good luck!

Female German shepherd from working lines... They are home bodies and farm dogs originally..

I think Akita's are the best breed of dogs. . . . I have 2 females right now. They do not really like strangers but they are very affectionate and loyal to family members, even the kids. There are to kinds of breeds, the Japanese which is the smaller version (around 75 lbs) and the American (which can get up to around 120). I have one of each and have to say out of all the breeds I have dealt with, this is the one I want. In fact since my Japanese version is now 14 and 1/2 is the reason I got the second one.

They tend to be very territorial and is not for a first time dog owner. They are big, powerful and tend to be an alpha dog, so if you have other dogs around, be careful. An Akita with the right temperament will accept strangers, but will come to your aid in a life threatening situation. When I first met my hunny, Kay charged the glass door, but I walked him out and she accepted him to a point. But if hunny wants to 'play fight', Kay comes running, so he still has to be careful after 15 years and normally she loves him now.

Akita's tend to be single person loyal only. For that reason I disqualify them for family situations. Single person only dog.

I almost feel sorry for anyone coming near us post SHTF. A while back, one of our little dogs got out, and took us a couple weeks to find her. During that process, I got to see all my neighbors pretty well, including their dogs. Mostly pit bulls, chows, Akitas, rots, etc. Would definitely be picking the wrong neighborhood.

Nicole's Akita was the only eye witness to her murder and I don't remember that murderer having any dog-bites ............but I,m a bit prejudice..................when it comes to Shepherds.

Unfortunately with a lot of the American breeds, their natural instinct and traits have been breed out. Her dog was a gift from her husband and also knew the other guy. Since they were both familiar to being at the house, I'm not surprised, but the dog was the one who alerted the neighbors, just to late. You can be prejudice to your Shepard, but I will still be partial to mine since I know what she is capable of and has come to my assistance in the past due to a potential break in from when I lived in the city.

Fence in the yard and get whatever dog you want dogs running lose are going to get in to somthing or disappear . Male dogs are going to roam . I have large lots for my dogs and back yard fenced in for or house dog . My chicken house is next to one of my dog lots .

"Unfortunately with a lot of the American breeds, their natural instinct and traits have been bred out ".............I agree................. Exactly why the teeth to the left belong to an import from Yugoslavia.................Yea, those teeth are perfect.... just as much as his disposition.............. I'm glad you are confident with your dog and give it a big hug from me !............. My pack will take him/ her in ..... (in case of emergency)

Most breeders of dogs I know Hunting/ Working raise as good of dogs as ever . Just like Guns , knifes , music or food we have the best of the best here in the USA . Don't think I need to go oversea's to get a good dog . I have seen some interesting ad's for Sheapards from Slavakia , Czech , and Germany .

I agree that there are some good USA breeders, I being one of them. With that being said I haven't been able to find many in the USA. I know of three in the states that breed GSDs that can actually do the work. Most just say they can or are from"champion working lines" never by a dog from champion anything! The groups that offer a champion title are all political and have nothing to do with talent.

I agree with titles being meaningless. My suggestion is get a rescue, as so many need homes. If you get a breed similar to the traits your looking for, and get it young, you can train it to your needs. Most dogs want to please their masters, you just need take the time to work with them. If you don't know animals, then take some classes with a trainer, they teach the owner as much as the animal. As far as keeping you dog on your property, if you don't, then you don't deserve a dog. They will get shot, hit by a car, fights with other dogs or wild animals, diseases etc. Dogs need care and supervision, and it's not fair to them if you're not going to do what is needed to care for and protect them. If you want an easy pet, get a goldfish.

Well I have to admit when I got my Japanese Akita (Kasey Lynn, aka Kay Kay) I could have cared less what her abilities were going to be when she grew up . . . I feel in love with her because she reminded me of a bear. But thankfully she had natural instinct in her that showed thru but the ability to be loyal and protect each one of her family members is why I fell in love with the breed.

I have seen some interesting ad's for Sheapards from Slavakia , Czech , and Germany .......................................................................I've had 9 Shepherds in 25 years , 3 of those males.............have 3 Shepherds at present............ hands down ,at one year of age, that import is the best I've had ......no doubt...................Sometimes , you get what you pay for.................Sometimes you don't....................;)Yep , he's intact.
