Microsoft did an overnight update and installed "Edge" on computers. If you don't want it, you can go into programs and delete it
Some people may like it, but I personally do not like something being added without my consent.Edge is better than Internet Explorer, but not near as good IMO as other options like Firefox.

Yeah, I was going to make a similar suggestion. There's a lot to be said for an operating system where the source code is routinely scrutinized by developers from countless countries and who would blow in any spyware nonsense. (That's not to say it can't happen with Linux, just that there are FAR more eyes on what's going on under the hood than with Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc. so it's less likely.)You can stop the monitoring, auto upgrades and auto changes to your preferences by loading Linux over it.
just install the latest LTS version of Ubuntu (linux). It comes with firebox and Thunderbird mail. Then you can download open source software to do anything else. If you save all your MS documents you will lose next to nothing.
Go to the download page HERE
This will allow you to download an ISO file that you burn to disk and then put it in your drive and boot the computer.
NOTE: you can install it in a dual boot (saving your windows OS, test run it from the disk, or overwrite the Windows OS and erase everything on your drive. Save all your files, bookmarks and address book before overwriting the disk otherwise they will be gone.
I suggest you install in dual boot to try it out. That way you have all your files and you lose nothing.

Meerkat,
If all you want is a decent web browser you can download Firefox HERE for free. You can have Firefox download the viewers and protection you need online once it is running. Just look for the icon that has 3 horizontal lines stacked on top of each other in the upper right corner.
I think you can set "file associations" in Windows. For browser you can remove your current browser from the list and set it to use Firefox automatically. Then, anytime you open a web address it will use Firefox to get there.
It has been a very long time since I used Windows so maybe someone can help you find "file Associations" easily.
If you need to download a browser go to ninite.com. You will get the latest version with NO added crap.
You pick what you want, download the installer, run the installer, and get a clean fresh copy.
When you run Firefox it will ask if you want to make it the default browser.
Ninite has a lot of programs for just about anything you need.
do you have a picture/screenshot of what you're talking about? Edge definitely has the traditional favorites/bookmarks like all browsers have had since AOL shipped on 3.5" discs. What I read on EDGE is that it uses "favorites" like Chrome and not Icons like IE. I hate digging through the "favorites".

Support for IE11 will only last as long as the OS you're using. Windows 8 is the oldest OS still supported, with an EOL of January 2023. Windows 7 support ended Jan 2020, and XP years ago. So unless you're on W8 or W10, your IE is unsupported, and has potential to get you hacked.
Firefox offers a things called "Top Sites", based on your browsing history. When you open a new tab you see something like below. You also have the option to "pin" a site so it stays there indefinitely.

For people that don't like change. Firefox offers a thing called ESR, Extended Stable Release. It's intended for corporations that don't like having frequent changes to deal with. You get all the security patches quickly, but new features are farther between.
