Microsoft did an overnight update and installed "Edge" on computers. If you don't want it, you can go into programs and delete it

Edge is better than Internet Explorer, but not near as good IMO as other options like Firefox.

Some people may like it, but I personally do not like something being added without my consent.

Unfortunately, the second you bought that computer and clicked the terms of service you 'legally' agreed to it. Those terms of service require a law degree and several weeks to get through.

You can stop the monitoring, auto upgrades and auto changes to your preferences by loading Linux over it. :)

Yeah, I was going to make a similar suggestion. There's a lot to be said for an operating system where the source code is routinely scrutinized by developers from countless countries and who would blow in any spyware nonsense. (That's not to say it can't happen with Linux, just that there are FAR more eyes on what's going on under the hood than with Microsoft, Apple, Google, etc. so it's less likely.)

The best indication is that most hackers use Linux operating systems.

What I read on EDGE is that it uses "favorites" like Chrome and not Icons like IE. I hate digging through the "favorites".

At least now there will be a new #1 browser (for downloading a good browser). :)

Youtube is slow to load and keeps turning.I just got rid of Adobe Flash because it didn't stop the interuptions. Now I just have Opera, should I change ? I have windows 7 .Don't want windows 10 till I have to .
Hubby has ChromBook so his works ok,just can't hook it up to smart tv for largerr screen.

just install the latest LTS version of Ubuntu (linux). It comes with firebox and Thunderbird mail. Then you can download open source software to do anything else. If you save all your MS documents you will lose next to nothing.

Thanks SheeepD,I'll see if I can find it.

Damn gues putting up a link would be too much to ask, huh?
I already used two sites for AdobiFlash and found out they were not Adobi Flash originals and can give you a virus or whatever. Now I her Adobi is about to be gone for good. So I deleted both Falsh downloads yesterday.

Go to the download page HERE
This will allow you to download an ISO file that you burn to disk and then put it in your drive and boot the computer.
NOTE: you can install it in a dual boot (saving your windows OS, test run it from the disk, or overwrite the Windows OS and erase everything on your drive. Save all your files, bookmarks and address book before overwriting the disk otherwise they will be gone.
I suggest you install in dual boot to try it out. That way you have all your files and you lose nothing.

Thank you SheepD. :huggs:I'm very bad with some things on this laptop and ccomputer speak.

Meerkat,
Save the ISO file to your computer, where you can find it. After it is saved then you burn it to a dvd or cd (depending on the size of the file).
This is a complete OS that can replace your Windows OS. It comes with Firefox and Thunderbird. From Firefox you can add plugins (auto install at your command) and set preferences.

All I want is to be able to watch bideos, we don't play games so don't need whatevr that is. But we use youtube all the time ,repairs, gardening, music, aand a movie a when we can find one which is maybe once a month.

So will this work and should I trade it for Opera? I don' hve a disk or know anything about disk. [ hubby said he can do it but I'm not so sure his ability is up to date with his ego. He is better than me but thats nto saying much.]

Maybe between the two of us we can do something. Will it owrk for Windows 7?

Meerkat,
If all you want is a decent web browser you can download Firefox HERE for free. You can have Firefox download the viewers and protection you need online once it is running. Just look for the icon that has 3 horizontal lines stacked on top of each other in the upper right corner.

This would happen when we can't have visiters here or I'd get out 8 year old great grand to help, lol. Will let you know how its going.

I think you can set "file associations" in Windows. For browser you can remove your current browser from the list and set it to use Firefox automatically. Then, anytime you open a web address it will use Firefox to get there.

It has been a very long time since I used Windows so maybe someone can help you find "file Associations" easily.

Thanks SheepD for so much help. I am good at lots of things but web is not one of them.

If you need to download a browser go to ninite.com. You will get the latest version with NO added crap.
You pick what you want, download the installer, run the installer, and get a clean fresh copy.
When you run Firefox it will ask if you want to make it the default browser.

Ninite has a lot of programs for just about anything you need.

do you have a picture/screenshot of what you're talking about? Edge definitely has the traditional favorites/bookmarks like all browsers have had since AOL shipped on 3.5" discs.
Support for IE11 will only last as long as the OS you're using. Windows 8 is the oldest OS still supported, with an EOL of January 2023. Windows 7 support ended Jan 2020, and XP years ago. So unless you're on W8 or W10, your IE is unsupported, and has potential to get you hacked.

Firefox offers a things called "Top Sites", based on your browsing history. When you open a new tab you see something like below. You also have the option to "pin" a site so it stays there indefinitely.

For people that don't like change. Firefox offers a thing called ESR, Extended Stable Release. It's intended for corporations that don't like having frequent changes to deal with. You get all the security patches quickly, but new features are farther between.

When I click on "history" or "favorites" all I get is a blank page. My computer is set to remember nothing, allow only 1st party cookies and delete everything when I close the browser. There is a host of privacy and security settings that I take full advantage of. I like it that way.
