Faraday cage

I know that a microwave oven can be used as a Faraday cage to protect electronics from EMP (if that is no longer true please correct me). Does anyone know if it will block the signals to a cell phone?

Easy to test. Some microwaves do, some don't. Basically, put a cell phone in it, call it. If signal gets through, it isn't protected.

Plenty of ways to make a more practical faraday cage though.

Make a cardboard holster, then cover it in foil tape. Add a similar cap and a way to make it seal, and you should have it. Or, any lined, small metal container, like try a cookie tin, for example.

There is that. I mean there are other communication methods if that is really a concern.

As for metals, has to be conductive. Does not have to be grounded.

You can even get Faraday bags (authorities use them to prevent remotely wiping out data on equipment seized)

I put ours in an all metal cookie tin lined with bubble wrap to stop the electronics from touching the metal of the tin.

Or you can get a "burner" phone. No way to track those. I bought a Track phone at Walmart for $6 cash and I buy minutes also for cash. There's no connection between the phone and me.

Lots of really bad information here concerning EMP...

A microwave? ROFLMAO.. =FAIL Unless the EMP somehow happens to be at the exact same frequency as you cook your popcorn with, the microwave isn't going to help..

Having a working ham radio, cb radio, or a variety of diagnostic tools like multimeter or voltage testers would be very helpful and could make a huge difference in your survivability. And what about a battery charger? An EMP could fry those too so now no flashlights..

not keeping any of those, my lights will be storm lanterns-no batteries. why would I want a multimeter or a battery charger when there is no electric??

Suit yourself.. You may not have electricity, but I will.. I'll have multiple sources of electrical generation.. especially after I use my multimeter to diagnose and make repairs. You'd be surprised at how effective the Sun is at charging batteries...
