We've got the land. We moved a free small mobile home out there. We've been working on it slowly as we have been able to in the past 6 months. Finances, holidays, weather, and days off hasn't seen much progression. Our biggest hurdle was getting electricity out there. Although I have read others having to shell out major dough to get electricity to their remote places, our price wasn't too bad, yet saving up that amount was a challenge, with having two places and working on both and both vehicles running in to mechanical issues.
Hate saying it, but tax return will get us moving forward. Will be able to pay for the electric peeps to run us some juice out there. Will also be able to get a few other things done, but having some electricity will make all of it go that much faster, although we have a small generator out there for the time being and will keep for future use. Still need to fix a few minor plumbing leaks, paint interior, put up skirting, put in our own small septic, move over a big propane tank, get a few propane appliances installed, and replace a few windows before we can move. Should be able to swing all that soon. But once that is done.. ahhh!!!
Once we do get moved our finances will change for the better with not having to pay rent any longer and energy consumption going down with the smaller sqft and better placement of the home that will take advantage of passive/solar. Improved finances will allow us to be able to prep even more. Will be planning out a garden, add a few small animals to start. Once those start producing food will get to learn how to preserve, new to me. Want to also add a root cellar. The hubby also has plans for a small crop that should be useful for barter, if needed, or as a side gig for now. Eventually aiming for solar, but for now electricity is cheaper to get and get us out there.
Just so excited!! I've been reading tons and sitting here feeling hopeless. It's like having a thing that you can see, yet can't reach. We see the 5.6 acres, it's ours, we see the home, it's ours. Yet, here I sit in a house I hate and paying lot rent and high utilities and no room for a garden with neighbors packed in left n right. I sooo want to aim for being more self-sustainable. So many plans yet I feel stuck. Now there's a light at the end of this tunnel.
Finally, finally, finally getting to move forward. No point to this post other than to get this off my chest.
