They got nothing on the humongous yellow garden spider that completely covered my front porch with its web. It was so impressive, I let it stay for a few days.

These Joro spiders are multiplying like crazing also! They look a lot like the writing spider but their webs are different and so is their markings. One lady wrote that their bite wasn't that bad, similar to a Black Widow? I don't know about her but I sure don't want to get bit by a Black Widow!

The only spiders people freak out in Washington, hobo spider, wolf spider, black widow and the giant house spider.

The giant house spider only runs around at night and looks like a mouse running across the floor and very fast, little over 4" in size, they harmless, we leave them alone

Orb spider?
I thought it was a golden orb spider at first until I did more digging. It is in the orb spider family (Araneidae), but not called an orb spider. It is Argiope aurantia, commonly known as the yellow garden spider, black and yellow garden spider, golden garden spider, writing spider, zigzag spider, zipper spider, corn spider, Steeler spider, or McKinley spider.

we called them banana spiders growing up.

Banana spiders are related (in the same Araneidae family), but in the genus Trichonephila (Golden Orb Weaver Spiders). That is what I mistook the yellow garden spider for at first. The webs are similar and the spiders have similar characteristics but the markings are different.

The banana spiders in the US are: Trichonephila clavipes (widespread) and Trichonephila clavata (in North Georgia)

I attack every bug I see with a vengeance! Keep the outside sprayed and inside treated too. Hate the creepy crawlers!

A lot of spiders are good to have around, the giant house spider for example eats a lot of bugs I consider pest such as stink bugs that get in the home during the fall to lay eggs, silver fish, ants, tics and fleas etc.. They are working for there room and board plus, they are a conversation piece when guest are here once they get past the phobia ;) for the past week and a half I have had a hobo spider that seem to meet me in the bathroom every morning at 4:30am but nobody else sees him or her.

We saw one of these in the trail to the pond the other day. My sister was scared of it so she knocked it down from its web. I told her to leave it alone so it could eat mosquitoes but she killed it.

Oh holy heck, so I am sitting out side, just looking at these pics and then reading the descriptions Dr Henley posted above when I feel something fly into the right side of my face. I know it was a bug of some kind, but I still jumped out of my skin!!o_O I really do hate spiders. . .

Years ago hunny and I were walking hand in hand thru the woods on a trail near the house. It was maybe 5 ft across. We were looking at each other talking when I felt a web hit my face. I went down while hunny kept walking. He looked back to find me on my butt, wondering what just happened. I freak out around them, no matter what kind they are. I hate spiders and snakes, even though I know some are beneficial, and I do try to leave those alone.

My rule for critters --- all of them ---- If they are in their natural environment, I will try to leave them alone. If they come into my environment -- Home or vehicle --- they are dead. Just that simple!
