I always find these fascinating. I’ve lived in 32/El Norte, 1/Yankeedom, and currently reside in 26/the Far West.
I think culturally, Colorado has a lot in common with the California of my youth — though I have been told that “it’s not like how it used to be”. Which makes sense; there are a lot more people in both places now, even without any of the political and cultural shifts.
Colorado definitely has its own unique sense of humor, quite different from the West Coast, and most easily described as “if South Park is an 11, Colorado in general is a 2-3”.
I actually loved New England as well, aside from the long winters. I just couldn’t get enough Vitamin D — or perhaps it was more that I was a college student and ill-equipped for the weather, so I didn’t get enough sunlight. I don’t have that problem in Colorado. There’s more sun here, the snow melts throughout the winter, and I have better winter clothes.
Would I move back to New England again? There are days I’d consider it, but it’d have to be exactly the right spot. Vermont, maybe? Not Massachusetts again, given the odds and ends I hear coming out of there.
SoCal? Eeeeeh. I miss my family, and I sure wouldn’t mind it from a gardening perspective (avocados and citrus without a greenhouse), but I sure don’t miss the traffic or the politics or the way my old neighborhood slid downhill in what felt like six months …
For now, Colorado’s a great fit. ^_^
