You're not going to find it, it finds you. I'm special...lolI agree, in fifty years of wandering through the woods, I have found it once.
I may have walked over it when it was dormant or passed it a few feet away from my path.
It is a fungus & like deep shade in thick leaf litter. I found it in mixed hardwood & confer forest in the 1980's, here in S.C.
I spend less time in deep woods, now that I am retired & have an orchard to hold my attention. You're not going to find it, it finds you. I'm special...lol
No, it's a mycoheterotroph - a herbaceous perennial flowering plant that has no chlorophyll and is therefore incapable of photosynthesis. Instead, it parasitizes fungi. It is a fungus & like deep shade in thick leaf litter. I found it in mixed hardwood & confer forest in the 1980's, here in S.C.
Okay, the wildflower book I read in the 80s said it was a fungus that lived in deep woods with rotting matter. No, it's a mycoheterotroph - a herbaceous perennial flowering plant that has no chlorophyll and is therefore incapable of photosynthesis. Instead, it parasitizes fungi.
