H3N2 very high risk flu

It always is worth getting flu shots.

There has been strong evidence that having the flu when you are younger may lead to Parkinson's disease later in life.

If you've ever seen the movie Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert Dinero, it was based on a true story.

In the non-fiction book it was based on, all of those patients were survivors of the 1918 influenza epidemic.

People are dismissive of the flu, and they really shouldn't be.

"But there are concerns the vaccine, made by World Health Organisation scientists, will prove to be ineffective as it will not match the H3N2 strain.

Scientists create the vaccines in March, based on which flu strains they expect to be in circulation. They are then given out in September.

Some health experts in Australia have blamed the severe outbreak on the vaccine not matching, with figures suggesting it to have performed poorly, potentially due to it having mutated. The vaccine used in the UK will be very similar."

Yikes!

This reminds me of Stephen King's novel The Stand.

Everyone says the 1918 flu was about 5% fatal, but that disregards certain ethnic groups like Native Americans.

In many Inuit villages in the arctic, the flu was about 50% fatal.

as long as I don't have to pay for it,it's kinda okay, but a helluwa lot comfier than wearing face masks all working day long

My job requires I take it. If I could skip it, I would. For several years I did the flu mist (live flu virus inhaled through the nose). Now big pharma says it doesn't work and they took it off the market...nice! after you made how many millions for how many years? I say it is all junk. I have had the flu one time. All the years I did the (ineffective) flu mist, I never had the flu. Go figure...

the bottom line is that pretty much any vaccine contains dead and weakened versions of the virus it is meant to protect against....

Not everyone is going to respond the same way to it. Me? It gave me a mild flu that lasted for a couple of weeks. I'd rather take 3 days of misery, and then be fine. Thanks. Keep your damn flu shot. :)

Start of 1918?

"Family members of an Arizona mother who died just one day after being diagnosed with the flu said the 20-year-old was very healthy leading up to her illness, with the exception of suffering from the occasional cold. Alani Murrieta, who leaves behind a 2-year-old and 6-month-old, had started complaining of symptoms on Sunday, Fox 10 reported."

“Monday she was still feeling sick, so her sister took her to urgent care, her and her kids,” Stephanie Gonzales, the woman’s aunt, told Fox 10. “They diagnosed them with the flu, sent her home with flu meds.”

read somewhere, that the current strain is something very different, that the vaccine isn't up to date with it,thanks to it mutating...again,any more info about this?
I could ask the docs working here, but as so often, they would give me the speech;it works just fine ;)

CDC predicted that this year's batch will only work on 10% of the flu outbreaks.

If they actually admit they they are worthless and liberal ABC reported it, I'll stay away from it.

Same as always.

When the Liberal media here actually says it' 10% accuate this year, that probably means it' 5% or lower.

I can't say if the flu shot is bad for the health or not but at 10% effectiveness sounds like a waste of resources. Health insurance won't even cover an operation with only a 10% success rate, I don't like the odds thus making the shot unnecessary! Though people gamble even with the odds of winning at 1/10th of 1%. We have 365 million people in the US, so they are saying that only a little over 3 million people will be protected by the shot, that puts it down in the 'luck' range kind of like gambling.

In other words, the flu shot is a game of chance.

Pretty much EVERYONE I know seems to have it to some degree (including me and mine). I'm pretty much just down to a stuffy nose at this point, but it's lingered since Thanksgiving. It never really knocked me out completely, still went to work, etc., but it has had me miserable for a few days. (at least it didn't affect my appetite, especially for Turkey Day)...

I haven't seen that much of in Texas. I looked at the CDC report state by state, and we are pretty low at this time. It hasn't really approached the full season yet, and it isn't even cold here. Tonight I think it will reach 40 for the first time in a while.

According to the CDC, we are still below the national average here.
Though I can't see how locally....

40 degrees? In Florida, that's considered arctic apocalypse....LOL.

Think I'm going to make some of my medicinal chicken soup tonight...

Chicken broth, chicken, egg noodles, carrots, celery, peppers, onions, sliced mushrooms, shredded cabbage (you don't even taste it), a little bit of tobasco (that and the peppers help with sinuses). All in a big soup pot...

I have read that even with only a 10% effectiveness this year that the shot is still worth taking. Even if it doesn’t stop you from getting it it can still make it less severe for you. I did not get it this year, but wish I had and have for many years now. I had a case of bronchitis from allergies for a long time now so that took me off the shot list. yes there are minimal risks with it, but I still firmly believe the benefits outweigh them. I heard many say they got the flu from the shot, but it doesn’t work like that. You can get some mild symptoms at worse, but you don’t catch the flu from it.
