Dear All,
Just wanted to wish you all a very nice Father's Day tomorrow. Today for me, like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day are days of reflection.
My wife and I ran into the parents of a young Marine that I gave a briefing just prior to him heading off to Marine Corps Recruiting Depot San Diego. As I briefed four soon to be Marines and three Army soldiers, it made me very proud to be an American and former retired veteran. This young Marine now is just finishing up Marine Survival School and his heading off on his first float. According to his parents, he loves the Corps, which raised my spirits. He comes from good stock, his mother they typical mom who worries about her baby, but as his father related he graduated top in his class and been promoted rapidly to section leader and lance corporal, a great feat for such a short time. So this made my Father's Day a bit more special.
Then my biggest surprise was when I got off the phone with a friend of mine who is deployed overseas. We've been doing this little phone-card tag for about 15 years now, how time flies and just to think, he was a baby airman, when I started mentoring him. We've done some serious changing over the years, he having the worst of it...but I never have missed an opportunity to send him either a card or a phone call. Sadly, this is his 7th Father's Day away from his three wonderful kids and loving wife since I've been retired.
So when you sit down tomorrow with your family, give thanks to all the fathers around the world. Some of whom do not get to share this great day with their families because they are out there safeguarding our great nation and the world's freedom.
