Turo is like the Airbnb of cars. People make their cars available for rent through Turo similarly to how people make their homes available to rent through Airbnb.
It's quite a large and apparently very reputable operation. But my question is not about Turo itself, it's about private auto insurance covering me when I rent from Turo. Since it's not a standard car rental place like Hertz, Avis, etc. there is a question if my normal car insurance will cover me while using Turo (they do cover me when renting from traditional car places like Hertz).
I have USAA auto insurance. I know there are many military vets on these forums, so I'm betting many here also have USAA insurance.
I did some Google searches "Does USAA cover rentals from Turo?" The "internet wisdom" answer appears to be "Yes, but..." One of the buts that was mentioned is that the rental car has to be worth less than your car that is primarily insured by USAA. That sounded incredibly bogus to me, so I called USAA to get the scoop straight from them. They said "I wonder where you heard that?" Which is a good question for things you find on the internet. However, it does appear that at least one person "on the internet" had USAA tell them this limitation.
Have any USAA insured people here, who have used Turo, heard of any limitation like this? I want to trust the USAA rep I talked to on the phone, but I've learned over time that what one customer service rep grants, another rep takes away. This even happens at USAA on occasion, even though they are one of the better insurers out there in my experience.
Turo offers insurance just like Hertz and Avis do, but that would cost me an additional couple hundred dollars over the base rental price. I don't want to spend that if my personal car insurance is good enough.
