Have You Planned For New Arrivals Post-TEOTWAWKI?

No matter how prepared we are, supplies and space are finite. Providing for the needs of everyone showing up at our doorstep after the SHTF is impossible, but the question remains who should be turned away and what will you do if they refuse to leave?

How many people could you provide for and for how long? Most of us have only enough for ourselves and our immediate family. A family of four with a year’s supply, taking in just one extra person reduces their stockpile by 25%. Two extras and your down to six months at best. Three extra – you get the idea.

My family knows not to come to me looking for a handout. They are welcome to set up camp at my place if needed, but they know to bring their own food and supplies and to be ready to do their share of the work.

It’s true that there is safety in numbers, but only when everyone works together for the common good of the group. More hands make lighter work but there will be no room for slackers.

The thing with family is they often bring extended family and sometimes even their friends, who may not share your beliefs or work ethic. Should you take them in or turn them away? What will you do if they refuse to leave?

Most people think they are entitled and will feel no remorse or debt while sponging off you, and if you don’t give them what they want, don’t be surprised if they try to take it by force. They may leave but they will come back, possibly with reinforcements.

It’s best to keep your mouth shut and to look as poor and helpless as everyone else. Most people think I don’t have a pot to piss in or window to throw it out of – or even know where I live for that matter. Hopefully, they will pass me by thinking it’s not worth the effort.

In a sense survival is looking after number one, putting yourself first may seem selfish, but sometimes we need to make difficult decisions in order to stay alive. If it comes down to me or them – it’s them.

What will you do when unwanted visitors come to your door looking for a handout post-collapse? Will you turn them away? Or will you pull the trigger if they refuse to leave? Could you live with yourself in the aftermath?

That reminds me; I need to finish digging that hole out back – never know when it could come in handy…

I have planned for people coming after TEOTWAWKI. It's called ammo.
Our house is very small. It is going to be tight with six of us here (though we do have three bedrooms). No room for anyone else and no food to share.
No worry about any other family members coming here because the closest is over a thousand miles away (our kids are closer and we are planning for them).

I do have help available. At last count 23 adult Alaska Grizzly Bears, Estimated 11 Alaska Coastal Brown Bears, and 19 or 21 Black Bears. Two small Wolf Packs, one medium size wolf pack and one solo Female Wolf, two Lynx families. That is the sanitation clean up crew. The early warning crew is Magpies, Canadian Jays, Ravens, and hyper-phobic Red Squirrels.

most people I know aren't preppers and wont survive the initial loss of food supplies and mains services.

I agree but that first thirty days will be trouble.
for who?, most people in the UK either live in cities or large urban centres. remember that a human being cannot live without food for more than 3 weeks or 3 days without water.
and they are going to be too weak to cause much trouble long before that.

Disease will kill off more than the actual loss of services. when the hurricane killed the power to a large portion of some of the NE cities the indigenous high rise native populations did not have enuf sense to go outside and dig a latrine!! they just went "outside" in the hallway??

Let's assume that it is a riot - a mass riot in major cities across the nation.
I don't live in a city and I am more than 50 miles from any major city.
How will this affect me? How will it affect you?

I know there will be affects that stretch well beyond the cities even if it is a call for martial law but I have no idea what the effects could be.

While many of the crazed rioters would just stay put in the cities, continuing to wreak havoc. There would be many people who fled those major urban areas down interstates, highways, and railroad tracks. Someone who go it alone but many would travel in large packs. While they may not be the rioting type, they would be desperate and eventually survival mode and fear would take over. The lawlessness and turmoil of that riot would eventually spread like a disease.

How often does this possibility get serious upper management of law enforcement discussion.......???

Depends a lot on department size and resources. We train and equip for riots and the potential for mass disturbances, but then again we are not massively understaffed and under trained like many major cities like Minneapolis PD, Seattle PD, etc., etc. In those places I imagine there is a point where the police just pull back and let it unfold or simply protect their own turf. I also imagine that smaller PD's and SO's begin to focus on closing the borders to their communities so those fleeing the cities can't come in.

From the article:
My family knows not to come to me looking for a handout.
I'm glad I'm not in that family (I wouldn't even call it a family after seeing that comment). My family would always be welcome, regardless of how many/few supplies I had on hand.

My mom, in her 90's, would not last too long, but she would be welcome. One of my kids, moving to Hawaii next week, would probably not be able to make the trip back to Colorado after global infrastructure collapses! My other kid could make it though. All would be accepted with open arms. Any others, trying to force their way in uninvited, would be met with loaded arms.

I sure hope that PD's are willing to do this. But, I wonder what would be their legal foundation for doing this. Yes, they could set-up a simulated crime scene and close the roads, temporarily for a long time. But, is there a valid legal reason to restrict access.

Not everyone has family worth taking in. I have several drug addicts in my family. Several thieves. They aren't welcome. I have friends that are closer than family and are always welcome.

As my boss always says, at some point we stop being police and we suddenly become border patrol. Where that border is depends on the circumstances and if we are operating under rule of law or not. Same goes for how vigilant we are in it's defense.

these people would be known as "refugees" and we have all seen the pitiful state that these get into.
without somewhere to go to they will be wandering aimlessly just hoping to find shelter, food and water.
I don't give much for their chances of survival, especially if all this happened in the winter.

My family knows that we'll rally together if at all possible. Some are local, some are not, but they all know where to go if things go off the rails. And, yes, I've socked away extra for them. They'll be welcomed and then they'll get to work helping to keep all our heads above water.

I've also socked away a bit for compassionate service, but that will be distributed through the local church. Worried that giving charity out my front door will lead to being overwhelmed. So, yes, I'm ready to help my fellow man to some extent. But I'll be keeping a low profile while I'm doing it.

every person has the chance to prep for them selves, many will not bother either because they just cant be bothered or they think "nothing bad will ever happen"- I know a few in this category, this is entirely their choice, don't come to me expecting a handout when TSHTF, your on your own you had your chance to provide for your family and didn't, when they fail they know who to blame.
(no one is going to save you, everything is your responsibility).
