Last night my wife and I were talking to a waitress. She complained about the high cost of eggs. I said isn't it funny they aren't killing wild birds, like Robins, Sparrows, geese, ducks etc? Nope just the ones that are a major protein source. You could see the light in her head come on.

Forgot to add, though, some of the price increase, at least along the West Coast states, is due to a new law (CA, OR, WA) that chickens can't be caged. So alot of chicken places shut down. They're paying $9 and $10 a dz there.
We knew a young married amish couple about 5 mi from us were signed up with a chicken farm. They had to save out 50 acres for it, they can't have any other birds on their farm that they raise, and the birds have coops, but are free range, too. 20,000 birds delivered to them from the company, and the company picks up the eggs. Their job is to do the artificial light timing, and I know it's at 2 am, and the feed (company provides) and water, and of course, the egg collecting.
So the problem with something like this, is, if a govt person comes around and tests one of their birds for bird flu and the test is positive, whether it's right or not, the birds are culled. And birds in a certain radius on other farms are culled, too. I doubt it would happen here, but ya never know.

According to Joel Salatin, the birds that are not carrying the virus should be kept and used to reproduce because they must have a stronger immune system that was strong enough to fight off the virus. But instead, the US DAH, as he calls them, is killing the whole flock. I realize it would be hard to test a flock of thousands of birds but that's what should be done. Kill the infected, keep the rest for reproduction.

Agree there, and a farmer should ask for a test repeat, and not take one test as golden. And not test a couple of birds and eliminate thousands, and those on other farms in their radius.
