My hearing has been getting worse the past few years. Many years of shooting without (on occasion) proper hearing protection, a few occasions hunting where the guy next to me shot and the muzzle blast set my ears a ringing (it happens when hunting on occasion, not unsafe shooting just kinda close and not healthy for the ears). A couple decades of work driving cop cars with the siren blaring or having others cops or fire trucks and ambulances drive up with the siren on. Living in the dry desert with lots of blowing dust and sand working it's way into my ear and the dry air hardening up the ear wax like cement.
I have always tried to keep them clean as best I can but aside from swimming or rinsing them out in the shower I never used any ear flush stuff. Last week my hearing seemed worse than normal so I mixed up 50/50 water and 3% peroxide and used that in my ears. I could hear it fizzing in my right ear but not my left ear. I let it soak about 5 minutes in each ear, rinsed and repeated 4 more times each ear. I didn't notice an improvement. My GF came home with an ear rinse kit so that night I used the ear drops and let them set as directed and rinsed with the suction bulb thing they included, and didn't notice an improvement. But, yesterday I used the ear candles she bought and was surprised at the crud it was able to draw up out of my ears. She had bought 2 and used one on her son the night before because his ear was bothering him and they were surprised at what came out of his ear. That left one candle for me so I used it on my left ear, which was the worst one, and I not only noticed a difference in hearing afterward I could tell my left ear felt different than my right ear. Maybe a pressure/balance thing? Anyways we headed to town to buy more ear candles, enough for everyone and 2 sets for me. When we got home I used on in my right ear and noticed the improvement. Last night I used the ear drops and bulb rinse again in the shower and could feel it working this time. Today my ears are kinda itchy a bit, nothing uncomfortable, I assume they are getting used to being cleaner.

I haven't had a chance to see if my hearing has improved much, the biggest thing will be if I can hear the TV while others in the room are making noise because the background noise made it very difficult to hear the TV or conversations. I do plan to keep using the ear drops/flush and will occasional use the water/peroxide rinse. I will also use some olive oil in the ear to soften things up and probably next week I will use the ear candles again to see if more stuff gets drawn out. I am hoping this helps, it will be another year or two before I can afford a hearing test or possibly hearing aids. (no insurance)

Just wanted to share, hope this helps someone. I knew of ear candles for years but never put much belief into them but after using them and opening them up afterwards and seeing the bits of ear wax up into the tube, and even a tiny bit of dirt about the size of the head of a pin, I am convinced they work.

I was told by an ear specialist that I should just let my ears clean themselves and not even let water
Into my ears when I shower due to the extensive damage to my ear drums. The last time I accidentally got lake water in my ear I ran a high fever for 10 days. The pain was so bad I considered using an drill. After that I was inspired to carve one of the cursed souls from Dante's Inferno.

For my part my ears clean themselves. Those with normal ears may have other options.

I should try them.
Good to know that is an option. I wasn't sure if I could put it in full strength. I may try that tonight. Thank you.

I was aware of that advice, too. Prior to now I never used anything other than soap on my finger tip in the shower or a Q-tip after a shower to clean the outer ear. However, it appears to me now that more effort is needed, at least on an occasional basis. Maybe it is related to living in a desert and the dry air preventing the natural ear wax and crud from working it's way out of the inner ear?

I am interested in what tricks others have.

I has server ear pain and couldn't hear out of one ear. I went to the ENT and my ear was packed with wax. So his nurse took a water pick like you use on your teeth and flushed the wax out. It was a huge glob of ugly wax but I was immediately better. She asked if she was hurting me and I said I couldn't decide if it hurt or felt realllly. I wouldn't recommend using a water pick on yourself.
A couple of years ago I went to get new hearing aids and the doctor kept commenting on how clean my ears were. I don't know what happened but lately I'm struggling with ear wax in my hearing aids and I have to replace the wax traps in them about once a week.

Now that you mention this, about 15 years ago at an NRA annual meeting in Kentucky there was a booth with a company that made noise cancelling ear inserts, and also hearing aids. They had a chair set up to look into peoples ears and clean out ear wax and if desired take a casting of the persons ears to be used for their hearing protection they sold. They had a camera on a probe with a monitor showing what they were seeing. I remember one lady with a big glob of ear wax they dug out, when they did mine my ears were clean, no wax to remove. Sooo, in the past 15 years is when the gunk started building up. Probably more in the past 6 years while I have been here working on the property and building the house and exposed to a lot more dirt and crud.

I got this 5 years ago when an ear got plugged with wax when cleaning. There are similar products for half the price and they are the same design. I just used warm water, the good thing is that you can control the water force by how hard you squeeze the sprayer.

I think something didn't come through in the post. What product are you referring to?

If it's earwax, a few drops of brown vinegar in your ear will eat it up, followed by some hydrogen peroxide to completely kill the fungus.
you will have the worst taste in your mouth for a few minutes however, get a coke handy.

I've had problems with my ears ever since I was a kid, always full of junk/wax after a bunch of ear infections early on. I suspect it's candida, which I've been battling forever systemically. Moved to the "desert" 10 years ago, and definitely made it worse! When it gets bad, I use this: ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018VMED2E )

to get the crap out. Warm water (with or without peroxide) in the syringe to flush and a variety of soft tips to scrape out what's left if needed. You obviously need to be careful to stay clear of your eardrums, but it's basically the same thing a doctor would do, and I'm way cheaper :)

I have that constant ring, have had infections from diving in lake water and lots of exposure to loud noises... I can hear most noises okay but the ringing makes me unpleasant if I have a headache......

Nope, I can hear fine... I just have a constant high-pitched ring (very quiet). I can hear pretty well, light ballasts humming, computer fan, squirrels, can even hear the wife talking - 2 rooms away... :(
Tinnitus is the name for the constant ringing in the ears. And, because it is a constant ringing you CAN'T hear NOTHING. :ghostly:

My mom is deaf and has been since she was a young babe. My dad thinks she is getting worse. I personally thing she is using it as an excuse to ignore my dad's nagging.

While I can detect that The Princess is still talking at me (what is with that?) 2 rooms away, I cant make heads or tails or what she is saying. That is when I yell " can't hear you!".

She knows that if she is not sitting beside of my (good) right ear or looking at me so I can read her lips, I can't hear her.

As a person profoundly deaf from my youth I always related to...

I hear a slightly out of tune radio playing in my head 24/7. they say its Schizophrenia.
Goes right well with my phantom PTSD and agoraphobia and the visits from the cat-people.

I got to ask, in case somebody here knows,
How the hell do you get PTSD and not know how you got it?

PTSD is caused by any reoccurring or violent event that is contrary to your code of ethics.
It can be caused by an assault, the assault of another, an accident that is severe or violent, or an imaginary event. Your brain can react to a dream or any input that it recognizes as unusually violent or strange. The subconscious mind reacts to stimuli as if it is real before your conscious mind modifies it to recollection. (it doesn't have to be a "real" event to cause problems.

Back on subject:
Last night I took a hot shower and used peroxide in each ear several times, this time only diluted 25%, so 75% peroxide and 25% water. After several rinses in each ear I flushed the ears with warm water. I then used the store bought ear drops and rinsed again with warm water. I went to bed after that, watched a movie until I fell asleep. When I woke up in the middle of the night I had ear wax on the pillow. Apparently the rinsing and warm water softened it considerably, and I know there was still some water in my inner ear after rinsing, but lying on my right side for several hours allowed the wax to drain out of my ear. I am amazed at the large amounts of wax I have been getting out of my ears. Even if some may not want to use the ear candles consider using over the counter ear drops/rinse or the peroxide rinse. I used to think I kept my ears clean, but it is now obvious I need to rinse them out regularly.

I can hear fine - I get tested every year for work and the little beeps come through loud and clear. I've got just a little loss, probably from playing the drums in high school and college, along with a lot of loud concerts and nightclubs back in the day. What I can't do, is distinguish words when there's background noise, or if the speaker is talking away from me instead of towards me. My ex knew that and constantly talked away from me, I think so she could yell at me for saying "what?". Anyway, maybe I need to try the earwax cleaner. I've never done it. Thanks for bringing it up...

My mother used to heat glycerin in a double boiler and put the drops in my ear and put a cotton ball in it to hold it in place, it cured earache.
