Holy crap, someone should have told me long before now! Went to a roadside stand yesterday and bought a bunch of tomatoes. All they had were these weird purple and red and orangish colored mutant looking heirloom tomatoes. Didn't want to go somewhere else so I bought them. These things are at least 2x better than regular tomatoes. That taste amazing and the mango pico I am in the process of making also tastes better because of it.

Is this something I can grow in a bucket on the patio?

Probably. Just save some seeds from the tomatoes you bought. Actually, just leaving some tomatoes you don't want in the bucket may be enough.

About 5-6 years ago, I bought about 30 heirloom Roma tomato plants (for canning). Grew them in the garden and did my canning. Obviously, many got left behind in the garden as I'd toss bad ones or just pooped out and didn't harvest them all.

The next year, I was getting ready to prep the garden again and found over 300 tomato plants! I didn't need to plant tomatoes at all. Actually pulled out about 100 and gave them to friends for their gardens.

I still have a few growing after all these years. They're not producing like they did in years 1 and 2 but the plants still keep popping up.

Save those seeds!

I’ve got my tomatoes in the raised beds in the garden and in pots on the patio. Even my broccoli is in pots on the patio. Last year I had cherry tomatoes in a “self watering” pot on the landing outside my front door. One must’ve rotted on the vine over the winter and half the pot has volunteers.
