Hello. Not a particularly serious prepper here, but if I still have a job in a few months I'm looking at buying some land in Alberta and building a self-sufficient, off-grid house that I can move to in a few years. Just looking for a forum to discuss prepping in general.

howdy from a Texan .... and welcome to the forum and family...there's quite a few knowledgeable folks here that'll gladly tell ya what you need to know,or at least point ya in the right direction and/or give ya a good idea or 2..and by all means jump right on in with any replies you have on a topic

Welcome. Now is definitely a good time to start thinking about prepping, both short term and long.

Not much news out of Canada about COVID-19, how are things there?

I'm honestly surprised that there are so few confirmed cases, because Trudeau let planes continue to fly in from China for a long time. I'd have expected Toronto and Vancouver to be much worse than they're claiming. Possibly they are and we don't know.

Here on the Prairies, it's not too bad. I think we have a couple of hundred cases in the province so far, and while a lot of businesses have had to close to walk-in customers, most of the retail and food businesses are still doing delivery and/or pickup sales. It's the service businesses who are suffering because most can't avoid having customers come in and those who don't have jobs are spending less on the services that can still be done without physical interaction.

I'm lucky that I can work from home, but one of our smaller customers in the US is already in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so who knows how long before my employer might have to lay off some people. We also typically have a lot of people travelling to customer sites in the US, so they obviously won't be doing that for some time.

Warm Welcome from the Arizona valley folks. USA

Yeah, we started looking for land to buy last year but were planning to look more seriously this summer. Then this virus thing came along.

I think you are going to see real estate prices drop next year. As the economy tanks, so does real estate typically.
