Welcome from just over the border. I'm not sure if I count as an old guy, but I've always said with me it's not the age but the mileage! Just curious, what got you into and what kind of prepping are you interested in?
I've been in the 911 community for 26+ years. I've had class after class on various topics. On 10-6 & 10-18-14, I blew C5-6&6-7 and was out of work until Feb 2016, meanwhile my employer went bankrupt. We were almost caught in a bad way. During my recovery and injury time, I had plenty of time to research each topic in detail.
I realized that, even with my LEO background, we were woefully unprepared for much of anything. I took at a long hard look at the tactics and preps of our locals and realized that I wasn't alone.
My wife teaches less than a mile from home. Her school has an SRO(sometimes), and is pretty unsecured. No real "fences", very few cameras, etc. Then at the homestead, I looked at what we had/didn't have. So much was lacking. With the influx of Terrorism, the lack of realization of reality, and a lack of supplies in our own area, I made a conscious decision to make a change. I began to upgrade my weapons and the like, load up on nonperishable items, and take time to set up my family to be more prepared for what we are most likely to experience. Being rural, power outages, active shooters, storms, etc.
So basically I have tried to start getting ready for worst case local stuff, and then broaden the aspects to larger things. Trying to get the wife on board, has been the biggest hurdle. She's slowly coming around. She fussed when I CC'd everywhere at first. Now she just checks to make sure it's concealed before I leave. Small steps....
