In a cabin, on a mountain, in "Wilderness" Alaska.
One of my FREE boxes of food had several cans of Turtle Beans. On the picture on the label of the can it shows them as "GREEN" and looks like a can of Green Peas. but the contents are solid "BLACK" looking like Black peas. Note: The best by date is September 2025. My concern is that they may be bad for some reason, as they are for sure NOT green.

So, after reading the ingredients it says the can contains BLACK TURTLE BEANS. So. I am now calm. Yet wondering why the photo on front of the can shows GREEN peas. And YES, before today I had never even known Turtle beans existed.

Thank you both. I didn't know what turtle beans were either. Black beans are yummy.
That's probably the new 'non-racist' name for "black beans".
Like what they did to Aunt Jemima :(:

Well, I just eat a huge helping of Black Turtle Beans, and they are super delicious. I need to dig through 20'some boxes of free food and find more. Or I will order a few cases.

Made in the slow cooker, this hearty and comforting recipe comes together quickly and cooks unattended. All that is required is browning the sausage in a skillet and then adding to the crock pot along with the remaining ingredients, which include canned black beans, onion, celery, peppers, and garlic, as well as herbs, canned tomatoes, and chicken broth. A bit of cayenne pepper provides a little heat—use as much or little as you like, or eliminate altogether.

Yeah, but who can eat it with all that okra and cayenne?😂
No okra in the recipe, it's celery. :)
And you don't have to put any cayenne pepper in it, if you don't want to.

I know that black beans are popular in Cuba as well as other Latin American countries. There is also a recipe out there for black bean burgers.

https://www.homesteadingforum.org/threads/soup-recipes.280/post-481104
Edited to add the recipe I put the link for.

8 Can Taco Soup
1 can chicken broth
1 can green enchilada sauce
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 packet taco seasoning
(Whisk those 4 together in a large pot of low heat)
Drain and add:
1 can corn
1 can petite diced tomatoes
1 can chicken chunks
Then drain and rinse and add:
1 can black beans
1 can pinto beans
Serves 8.

Years ago turtle beans could be bought as seeds from seeds companies Like Vermont beans, but I checked & they do not list them today
https://www.vermontbean.com/
I'm pretty sure it is hard to make a profit selling 'seeds' when you can buy the beans for about $1 per pound.

...And I always thought that beans were the seeds of a plant. :dunno:

Those are sprouts.
A bean is something you eat, a seed bean is something you plant in the ground to make more beans to eat.
Yes I & other have planted eating beans & got 95% plants, but it can go wrong to.

the green turtle bans are normal. the black ones are ninjas.
be polite when you open the can you dont want to piss them off.

What is the difference between planting and eating beans? I would think that they would be pretty much the same thing.

I think it is the chemical sanitizing/washing process that most 'eating beans' have to go thru, kills them from sprouting.

One you eat, the other you plant, You can not eat you bean & have it too!

Any organic seed , grain or tuber can be planted and grown.
It's no different than saving your own seed.
Just make sure it's an heirloom.
