After years of having digestive issues, I figured out that most processed commercial foods, especially baked ones contained various preservatives and conditioners that I can’t process. The doc first thought it was gluten, but after eliminating and then adding back in only homemade stuff, it was pretty clear gluten wasn’t really the problem. A single slice of commercial bread will take me down for a couple of days. For the last 5 years I’ve been making all baked goods at home including breakfast cereal. I have 3 large menfolk (a couple of teenagers and a husband all over 6’2”) that mow through food. I have developed a granola recipe they all like for breakfast either dry or in milk, but I was wondering if anyone has other tried and true cereal like recipes? I make a batch a week and was thinking they might like some other type to quickly chow down on since they have been eating this for a couple of years.

Thank you! This is so much better than the pre-formed puffy cereals that the cereal aisle is full of.

I knew someone who made big batches of granola, weeks worth of it, at one time. He would go shopping for the ingredients and get all of them together and then make it up. He used different dried fruits in his and sometimes changed it up a little. I'm sure finding the availability of some things sometimes contributed to that changing it up a little.

I love hand written recipes. My wife has a metal box of 3x5 cards from her Grandma. Sometimes it takes a little interpretation. Like at the end of your recipe I read Zommutes, nope that can't be right. Maybe commutes? Nope that ain't it either. Finally I got 20 minutes. Not making fun of you it just seems like with our digital world handwriting is sometimes difficult to read. Just imagine cursive. I have been toying with having someone type up my wife's recipe box and make a cookbook to give to our kids. Now I wonder if they would be able to get it right. I hope I didn't hijack your post to technology or something else.

I don't think we have any breakfast recipes. We did recently get a wheat berry grinder. Is that what you do?

Ha! It says until edges turn gold. This is one of my more readable cards, most have all kinds of scribbles and notes all over them. I have never had a recipe that I didn’t tweak and my handwriting is not very good! You should see my hand written engineering calculations 🤣. I usually have to type them for anyone to review them!

We did something similar. Hubby was feeling like an 80 year old. We did a month of no grains, sugars or chemicals. Began adding a grain here or there to test. Long story short (sorta) we have figured out what it is but not the chemical name. When wheat is harvested and piled in huge piles, they spray it to keep the bugs, mice and birds out of it. Wheat is not washed before it is ground into flour so we are eating that mystery chemical. He can have organic bread which we get from a local artisan bakery with no problems.
 
Funny to run across a ...cereal thread.. As I was making a grocery list and decided I was craving a box of Grape Nuts cereal.. Have not had it in many years..

Homemade granola, ...Gorp..., the old Checks mix recipe and such are always good..
 
Found a recipe for homemade Cheerios. Trying it out now. Already had to substitute almond flour for coconut flour since we are mysteriously out of almond flour. At this point I’m pretty sure little round o’s are out of the question so more of a grape nuts kind of cereal. I was planning on getting a pasta extruder for my kitchenaid mixer, and I would like to think I could make o’s with that if the dough is the right texture.

Ok first run was a fail. Kid said it was missing something. Landed on needing honey. Reprocessing the previous batch by running it in the food processor with honey and a little milk so we can get chunks more cereal like and rebake it until crunchy. We will salvage this one, but hopefully the next attempt will be a better version from the beginning.
