In the UK Off Grid Basics video, I was confused. Why was he worried that people would complain about him building something on his own land? The way he was talking it was like he was squatting on someone else's land, but he clearly said he bought the land.

Two primary reasons (1) Even though he owns the land outright in the UK he cannot build any structure without planning permission, people commonly have to build a structure and have it mounted on wheels so they could technically move it, thus proving to the state its not a permenant structure.
(2) In the UK private ownership of land means NOTHING to huge numbers who would trespass to steal, hunt, poach, take timber or to simply wreck what is there.

There is almost ZERO chance of criminals ending up getting shot or having the dogs set on them because criminals have more rights than law abidding citizens do.

But he seemed more worried about having the neighbors' permission than having legal permission.

Well, we do sometimes have that problem in urban areas or semi-rural areas when a HOA is involved. But usually not in rural areas. At least not in this part of the country. People in rural southeastern areas are pretty prickly about other people not minding their own damned business.

even when someone gets permission to build on their own land in the UK that comes with limitations, you usually get a 5 year time frame to prove you can make money, yep its all about money, if not your planning is reversed after the 5 years and you have to vacate your own land, you can use it but not live on it.
I know someone who is going through this 5 year limitation at the moment.

Germany also has some stupid laws. Many have built little weekend houses, used them for a while, the neighbors got jealous, reported them, the law came and demanded to see a building permit, did not have one, apply for one, NO, it was built without, tear it down, but I applied for a permit, yes, but it was built without one, TEAR IT DOWN; GET THE PERMIT AND THEN YOU MAY REBUILD IT!! I wanna know why some people cannot just up an die and leave the rest of us alone??!!? Live free, GP
