Other than freezing how could you cure Hooligan for human consumption or to use as candles...???

One reason i been posting stuff i have about shad and herring and more and getting them running back up streams on east coast. if you notice last short video i posted today is across the big pond and guy is talking about various types of fish and how folks use to come to river and catch herring to live on.Oily fish !

If it was me i just gut and clean them and then canning them to eat. i have eaten various kinds of home canned fish over the years.

Oh I would just put it in a canning jar with 1/2 tsp salt for pints and 1 tsp for quarts- pc for 90 minutes at appropriate pressure. (Just like salmon)
Drying them might be easier. I think historically that is how they were preserved.

It's pretty much fish soup, right? it ought to can just like catfish stew.

How do you "LIGHT" catfish stew for heating or light......???

Some of places i was working didnt have as many and easy bait fish..herring..as in town.I could catch them easily in town. So i would pack them in tupperware and layer salt, fish, salt, fish.Left guts in them since i was fishing with them and they never went 'bad'.That way i just bait a hook and fish instead of trying to catch bait and then fish.Tossed them in my duffel.Had to hide the things as others wanted to use up my fish bait when they seen i had them.

Most people agree that hooligan eaten the day they are caught are at their best. After that, you're looking at smoking, freezing, canning, pickling.

From the web page, I got the idea they were preserving the oil only. it should preserve like any other fish when you can it, but since you asked, I would say any taper lamp would handle it fine. I made a lamp for peanut oil during the blizzard of 93, it worked well but it smelled like peanut-hell. I'm guessing your hooligan oil smells of fried fish?

I would fry them or pickle them, but there are none in South Carolina.
We have shad, carp, fresh water eel, pike, Gar & Catfish.
For candle tallow & bees wax.

I’ve only eaten Eulachon smoked. They went in the smoker with their heads, guts, and fins. I started at the head and ate everything except the tail. It was exclusively served with beer.
