Huge propane tanks

How do you protect a huge propane tank? They make really impressive sound effects when shot and can really ruin your day. Do you suggest putting them underground? How deep?

I would use a solid concrete wall around it with the entry point facing the house,,,that way if some a-hole decides to take pot shots at it he is real close and should it go boom,,,,,,,,,,,he goes with it,,,,and I don't think anyone is that foolish

Burying it is a good idea. I would have done it but decided to just rent a tank, and they don’t really want you burying their tank. Even just putting it in the back yard, not easily viewed from the road, and maybe a wood fence or hedges to help keep it out of sight isn’t a bad idea.

If the entry way does face the home and it goes boom, you may end up torching your home. BTW there are people in this world that are stupid enough to do anything.

my reasoning is anyone taking pot shots at it is doing it because they think they are being funny,,,,and even the biggest
a-hole out there is not going to risk killing themselves for a little stupid fun

I'm not too worried about someone shooting my propane tank. I've got a 500 gallon tank in the woods behind the cabin. It can't be seen until you're in my front yard. I've got a couple 20 gallon tanks at the pump house. They can't be seen until your right at the pump house. If you're in an area where that could be a concern, you could put your tank behind a block wall or a wooden fence out of sight.
I remember years ago about some idiot "hunter" that shot a hole in the Trans Alaska Pipeline. If it can be done, some pos will do it.

They make tanks that are meant to be buried. I THINK all you have to do for maintenance is keep the anodes changed so the tank doesn’t rust through.

Several years ago we were looking to change homeowners insurance companies. One of the first questions was if there was a buried propane tank on the land. I wish I’d asked why.

I’d love to have about a 1000 gallon buried one at the BOL...

if you hunt around larger propane tanks can be found at a reasonable price,,,,,I can't speak for anyone but myself but 5k of propane would last me 5 to 10 years

It's just generally cheaper to lease the tanks.

Maybe make a concrete block enclosure for it, with a metal roof and doors for the company to access it? As long as they can remove it, replace it, they should be fine with it.

I would have several smaller tanks (like the 15 pound tanks) as opposed to one or two big tanks.

Smaller tanks can be moved and/or concealed, they can be used for trade, and they can be stored in widely seperated places so that they don't get stolen.

The propane company told me that where I live, it's against local ordinances to have a propane tank, so they will not sell me or service a propane tank. So small tanks have to suffice.
