Storms knocked our power out, literally the second we got home from work last night.

So, my prepper instinct kicks in, and I immediately grab a lantern light, and go all over the house lighting our candle sconces, etc. (while decorative, it's also nice to be able to walk around the house in an outage, without needing a flashlight, etc.).

Well, we had forgotten to take anything out to thaw, but since we had to do the store anyhow (on the way home), we picked up something to cook. Well, no power, so that idea was gone. I mean sure, we could have put it on the grill, but really. (and fighting the rain?)

So, I still started to just stay put, but then I'm like....the heck with it. I want AC, etc. :D

So, I was a bad prepper. Instead, we just went out to eat, hoping if we stayed out long enough, it'd be back on. Our power company has a cool app, so we could see the area affected. Relatively small, about 150 people only. Estimated time to be back, midnight.

Well, that sucked. So, we made sure not to be in a rush while out. Got home about 11pm, power was still out, and house is now kind of hot (FL). Man, I really can't sleep in the heat. But, we also have to get up at 6am, so we tried. Power came back around 1am, so then I could finally get some sleep.

Good news though, is that although my wife already agreed to my generator and window AC in the guest bedroom idea (it's more containable than our master bedroom, and after Irma, the need for this was realized)...she hasn't yet loosened the purse strings for it. So....that's now changed, and we'll be shopping this week for both. :D

Not a bad idea actually.

The grill used to be under a gazebo, but Irma took that out. We do have a place where it can be out of the rain (but not the person doing the grilling), hehe....

I'll build a new gazebo eventually. I really liked the outdoor space. Best innovation I did with it, putting a fan up in the center of it, and the rope lighting around the inside. Made it a nice place out of the heat.

Yes, would have no other but my propane stove. Everyone should have one.

I keep a combination of portable stoves on hand, butane, propane, white fuel, kerosene and unleaded fuel. My home appliances are propane (full size - stove, frig and freezers) I lost power too many time to rely on electricity. Years ago I was stupid enough to buy a gas range when I should have got a frig first, nothing like returning home to spoiled food!

I'd say the farther out away from civilization the less one should depend on electricity unless you create your own of course. I usually don't have too many power outages but once it was out for 3 days and that was in the middle of winter, had to keep kerosene burning and stay home to make sure the house didn't catch on fire. So, If I had to do without electricity for very long and it was winter I would bring the wood stove in from the garage. I am thinking of hooking up a gradient propane heater though.

I'm starting to wonder if it's the "wife's lab" or the lab where you built your wife..... LOL

Lisa will get on here sometimes and read my post and I threw the little easter eggs in my post directed at her. We had a conversation the other day referencing backups to her phones and she made a comment about me better not have a backup to her so I threw that little egg in the post above :)
