How long have you been prepping?
Why do doomsday preppers prioritize being so prepared?
How did you get started in this culture?
What sort of steps have you taken or plan to take in their doomsday prepping?
How would you describe the prepping community?

How long have you been prepping?
Ever since I was a Boy Scout (Scout Motto: Be Prepared)
Why do doomsday preppers prioritize being so prepared?
Because we don't want to be THAT GUY (you know...the one who ISN'T prepared)
I guess the real question is "Why would anyone want to be THAT GUY???"
Lauren, do YOU want to be THAT GUY??? WHY???
How did you get started in this culture?
Prepping is not a culture, it's a state of mind. You get started by deciding that you DO NOT want to be THAT GUY. And then you make sure you aren't.
What sort of steps have you taken or plan to take in their doomsday prepping?
Uh, making sure I'm NOT THAT GUY??? Can't really get into all the specifics. Try visiting ready.gov to get some ideas from Uncle Sam for steps on being prepared.

Yes, the Federal Government runs a "prepper" web site..Uncle Sam is a prepper...who knew? Actually Uncle Sam is the ultimate prepper because he has a bottomless purse.
Want to know what the Federal Government recommends for a bug out bag (they call it a "Basic Disaster Supplies Kit"):

How would you describe the prepping community?
I can only describe this particular community because prepper communities are different. Very different.
The only words I can think of to describe this particular community are:
Eclectic
International
Knowledgeable

We really only have one thing in common: We do not want to be THAT GUY!!!

To be fair here Lauren, what reasons do you have to not be a prepper? I’m not talking about carrying an assault rifle and learning to make pine needle tea or anything. Mostly just knowing you have enough supplies on hand to not have to do a panic run to the stripped out grocery store shortly before a forecasted storm hits.

it always amazes me when you see on TV a bad storm is forecast and people leave it until like the day before it hits to go to the store then its mad panic.
if you live in a location that has regular storms why don't you have those supplies in hand ALL the time?
I saw one lady who said she didn't have any food in the house, yet the storm had only hit 24 hours before, so my question to her would be "Why don't you have any food?"

and it's about gaining knowledge, for me it meant among other things;back to school, spent two years+ there and now I'm a paramedic and beyond that
I'm a combat medic in the reserve, where I get additional training in stuff that suck if you face it in real life.

I was brought up by WW2 parents, self reliance was common knowledge back then, now its anything but common and most people are just plain stupid, like the woman on a reality show who yesterday asked " is the leaning tower of Pisa really made of PIZZA?" I mean you just couldn't make this stuff up!!!!

it's like having insurance, you don't plan on having a fire in your house, but if..then that insurance comes in handy.
My brother laughs at me. Says I'm dumb. And he's the teache4. Says so be it he will joyfully wait to see the glory! It hurts me so badly.hes older than me by about 4 years . But I see him in my dreams dieing because he wasnt.
I'm not super prepared but I've got a start . I'm single and will be having to make it on my own.it worries me my health won't hold out.i don't have land or guns . But I'll have a gas mask with extra filters a radio solar wind up kind. I'll have some foods and I've been saving seeds. I can garden, make my own soap, shampoo ..well right now I can I need to learn how to with ashes from a fire.
Why have I gotten into prepping. Like most people I don't want to be fumbling and not have needed essentials

but you are willing to take the first step, that's the important thing here.
and you already know to do stuff, that soap and shampoo will feel like heaven on earth after a while.
just take your baby steps,we all need to learn to crawl first before walking.

I have my medical suplies al together. But need various things to round it out. If i get much more i wont be able to lug it around. Tho i do have a piece of luggage i could use. Lol. Ive thought ove it all since i live in texas now i only worry about tornados but where i live isnt on the usual path for them. So now i think of three other things.1. An EMP 2. POLAR SHIFTS 3. OLYELLOW STONE PARK bloWING. NOw THAT ONE WONT SEE MUCH HERE EXCEPT THE ASH RAINS. 4. Nuclaer .i have no idea what to do about that umlgess my mask and iodine tablets.. i dont have a place for electronics yet. I have radiation therapy tabs on order and a mask and extra filters but dont know what else to get for those. What sort of skin creams for first aid for those things? What are you guys doing for these?

Plenty of people ridiculed and laughed at their local preppers in TX, right up until the floodwaters rose and it was the local preppers with supplies and rescue boats who got to them first. Houton 2017

Well, I'm sure this is long past the time for your project, but:

How long have you been prepping?

About 6 years, ever since my wife and I inherited a small ranch in the country.

Why do doomsday preppers prioritize being so prepared?

Hurricane Irma is a good example. We lost power (and water, as I'm on a well), for 5 days. Yet, my prepper ways ensured my family had food, water, light, etc. for that entire time. In addition, we had housed up to 50 animals in our stables, etc. on the ranch, for those who had to evacuate, and had food and water for them too. So, really, it's just common sense to prep. You never know what could happen to totally disrupt your life. In the case of the storms, 3 days before it hit, you couldn't buy gas in my town, or many other supplies. So it paid to be prepared.

How did you get started in this culture?

It started with hurricane prep, but then just a desire to be more self-sufficient. My wife likes animals, and wanted chickens and bunnies. I jokingly) thought, well, if the zombies come, that would be handy. But then, well, yeah...it would be good if something drastic happened, to be more prepared, and weather it. Why just "survive", when one can actually LIVE better too? So, I looked into ways to be more self-sufficient.

What sort of steps have you taken or plan to take in their doomsday prepping?

So far, we keep horses, bunnies, and chickens. This provides transportation, and food (in the case of a collapse). We also have planted some fruit trees, and are putting in a garden for additional food needs. We'll also do home canning, but stockpile some foodstuffs as well.

We have a well for water, and septic for sanitation, so this is all off grid. However, we do need power to pump the water, so this is a planned upgrade (solar powered pump). We do have an emergency bucket for water from the well shaft, but I always have at least a few hundred gallons stored at any given time.

We also have some fairly standard firearms for home defense and hunting, but also some unconventional plans should society go poof, for home defense. The best defense, is that we're away from cities, and out in the country. We will certainly take steps if things go south, to restrict travel to our area though.

We also have a network of family and friends who know what we do, and have different skills. These folks know they can come here if things go bad, and we can all pull together to survive and thrive.

How would you describe the prepping community?

It's a pretty mixed bag. Here on this site, most of us are more of the home farmer types, who just want to be more self-sufficient. There are others who are more lone-wolf Rambo type survive in the woods kind of guys, but these are a lot fewer than you'd think. Some are just folks who prep for natural disasters, but maybe stepped it up a notch just in case. And of course, there are niche people who think a particular thing is likely to happen. This is the exception though, not the rule. MOST of us just want to be ready for a host of scenarios that could happen. Basically anything that could disrupt our modern way of life.

We don't WANT anything to happen. I like my air conditioning. I like driving places. I like eating out, and buying food in a store. However, like another said, you get insurance...not because you want something to happen, but in case anything does.
