In a cabin, on a mountain, in "Wilderness" Alaska.
So, I was attempting to purchase a new vehicle in Portland, Oregon, actually negotiated a very good sales price. But my last question before going for this good deal was, "What will my total cost of everything be".....?? Turns out "ALL" new vehicles purchased in Oregon "must" be registered for minimum of (4) FOUR years. Right at $1,000.00 for registration. Dead deal.......sadly.

How is it in your state....??

In the past Alaskans would purchase a new vehicle in lower 48 and register it in Alaska, take the Alaska license plates on the plane down to the vehicle. Or you could get "Temporary" registration and paper license plates, good for 30 days. I don't know if any states still do that.

When I was an LEO in Nevada I recall Oregon Drivers Licenses being valid for like 20 years or more. That was unheard of for any other state. But I also recall seeing old Piece Of Crap vehicles/trailers being registered for several years in the future.
Now, given that Nevada vehicle registration and California registration being absolutely out of of this world back then I don't see how $250 a year for a 4 year plan in Oregon is out of line. From your point of view it seems a lot but from outside your state it may seem like a deal. Plus, you don't have to go and renew it every year.
Just a thought.

Never heard of that either. But $250 a year for registration sounds really high to me. In MA we pay $60 every two years flat out. But then I've never bought a car outside of my state.

I can add that FL still does the temp plates, we got some to drive back dear departed FIL's truck and boat in August.

Washington issues a temp plate when you buy a vehicle and sends the owner a permanent plate in the mail or you pick it up from the dealer.
The reason they do that is because of Covid.
License plates are made by prison inmates and they had to scale back for safety reasons.
Washington license plate shortage leads to temporary plate plan

Years ago the people of Washington State passed an initiative to make all vehicle license $30 a year. Naturally the politicians didn't like losing their money so they have found ways to increase the fee.

In Florida it is one year at a time, no matter new vehicle off the lot, used car from a neighbor, or simply a renewal.
Tag cost goes by vehicle weight. My truck weighs 6080 pounds, wife’s weighs more, but we are in the $86 per year bracket.
No emissions testing, no safety testing, nothing.

Florida - the Free State.

(Drivers license good for 6 years, concealed weapons or firearms license good for 7 years)

Darn Ben, now why did you have to break it down to how much a mile? I never thought about it.
Sorry about that.

I see numbers I do math. My bad.

Ben

Test

It worked! Nice

In montana after a vehical is 20 years old you can pay a one time fee of a bit more and get a permanent license. All trailers , motorcycles and atv's get a permanent plate from new or when you purchase a used one. And yes side by sides and ATV four wheelers are legal to ride on the road. Universal concealed carry without any license. I do love montana.

In California, the tags on a new car averages $800-$1000....PER YEAR!
My reg on my 2003 GMC is $165 this year due in September. I couldn't afford $1000 a year!

So, considering basic math and economics, each state has a budget and needs to raise that amount of money. Some states have income tax, some don't. Some states have high vehicle registration fees, some don't. Some states have high sales tax, some don't. California and New York have high everything, most don't.
When I moved from Michigan to Nevada many years ago my vehicle registration tripled and so did my car insurance, but Michigan had income tax and Nevada did not. Utah registration and insurance is less than Nevada but sales tax is a bit higher and Utah has income tax.
The money will come from somewhere, but for each of us it will vary on what we complain about or what we find absurd for other to pay.

Some states give money away to many liberal causes and some actually use less money than they collect in taxes. They put that money into an account for disasters and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Georgia tag cost is based on the value of your vehicle. They call it an Ad Velorum tax.
Want to drive a brand spanking new top of the line BMW? That's going to cost a tad more than my beater 1997 Buick LeSabre. 😂 😅

That is the way it should be. If someone takes care of their car so that it lasts longer, and maybe even still looks good, they should not pay more to be penalized for making it last. If a car is not maintained and turns to junk it takes time, machines, and power (diesel or electric) to scrap it, shred it, or crush it. Reward, or don't over tax, someone who takes care of their investment.

It has been decades, but when I bought vehicles in Seattle I had the dealer deliver the vehicle to the barge company. I beat all sales tax and registration fees. Being shipped out of State on a common carrier makes all the difference. I know others that have used the trick of taking their plates with them to pick up the vehicle.
