I might have bought the wrong knife… I wanted a small boot knife. I just got a Sog instinct mini. It came with a belt clip which I removed. I have no intention of using the clip.

Thicknesses
blade – 3mm
handle – 6mm
sheath – 8mm
round clip base on sheath – 11mm (11+)

The knife I like, the size is what I wanted. But the sheath, not so much. The description was boot or neck knife. This sheath is great for a neck knife, very tight. It holds the blade well, no complaints. In fact have to pull hard to get the knife out. With use it'd get looser, still not a problem.

But as a boot knife it’s a fail. First, the sheath is so tight I’d have to pull both out of a boot to wrestle the blade from the sheath.

Then, the sheath is 8mm thick. Thicker than I would like but… The round base for the clip (on both sides of the sheath) makes the thickness almost double the handle width, almost 4 times the blade width.

I went online and found several people making custom kydex sheaths. One company was making them for Sog’s. I know little about them. Anyone have experience? Will this get me a better, more usable sheath for a boot? Or should I start over with a different knife? It was only $31 so starting over isn't a big deal.

Kydex sheaths are very easy to make.

You can make a simple press out if plywood and foam- ive even improvised sheaths using a couple of pillows and a piece of plywood I literally sat on.

Buy a sheet (or a couple to learn on) of kydex on Amazon- throw it in your oven. Wrap your knife in masking tape, fold the kydex sheet in half over the knife and add pressure. Cut out the shape your want the sheath to be- The rest is sandpaper and a few screws/rivets around the edge.

You can adjust the shape, add clips or a velcro strap or whatever other method youd like to attach it to your boot.

For $31 ordering a custom piece of kydex is not worth it- either make your own or start over.
