No, Kevin, I didn't know any of them. During my 40 year career, I spent 30 of them either escorting officer funerals or representing the agency at the funerals. There were (too) many and each one sad.
I post these just so that their stories get brought to mind every once in a while. I think its important. I wish I could do the same for all who serve (fire, EMS, military, etc.). They all deserve to be brought to mind on occasion, rather than their memories be lost forever.
In a similar vein, I am outliving the much younger officers I served with over the years. Out of the 21 officers I served with in 1984, 7 have passed away from accidental or natural causes. Sadly, due to circumstances beyond my control, I was only able to attend two of their funerals. It will be the same in the future, methinks. I am fortunate that one of my fellow motor officers keeps in touch with folks at that dept and she relays the info to me, otherwise their passing would have not been known to me. I'm not sure that what I just wrote expresses my entire thoughts regarding this topic, but I hope it does - somewhat. I am not particularly well liked by many (most) of my past co-workers, but that is one-sided as they all remain treasured deep within my heart.
