Hubby got a 1099 in the mail from the state unemployment dept for being unemployed during the covid lockdown a couple of months ago.
But he was never unemployed and didn't ask for help.
Well apparently someone used his name and got money.
He called and told the lady and she said that 1) the 1099 wasn't sent to the IRS so he didn't have to worry about that. 2) Someone used his identity and 3) He had to make out a police report about the stolen identity.Which he did.
Today he got a call from the State Police. The officer told him that they tracked the money to New York and from there it went to ( get this...) Russia(!)
I have no idea how many people have been hit by this here in WV or how much money was stolen. It was covid money from the federal government.
The whole thing is just ridiculous to me.
One fella at work told hubby that he did apply over the phone and all they asked for was his name! ( wth?)
Now what kind of stupid do you have to be to run a dept like that?
