Seriously to my American friends, if you are coming to the UK in the future stay away from London, the cops are losing the streets to gangs and extremists.

More murders than New York, most of the victims stabbed to death, but 3 of them shot. Aren’t guns Illegal over there? Clearly strict gun laws work.(sarcasm)

How does the average person defend themselves and keep safe in a city like that?

You don't, you bleed. The UK has the cops armed to the teeth, the terrorists armed to the teeth, the gangsters armed to the teeth and the street gangs armed to the teeth. Of course the law abiding public are disarmed and are victims in waiting and those ruling elites who disarmed up live in splendid isolated well guarded isolation.

If I have to go to a large city in the UK these days I dress like a backpacking tourist, boots, cargoes, Gortex or softshell jacket, BB cap, Shades ( note the added benefit of helping keeping acid out of your eyes) I wear a Rucksack (no pulling a suitcase any more WAY to dangerous) and I carry a telescopic hiking pole as a LEGAL defensive implement, UK legal knife. If I need to use my I phone I go into a shop or store never produce your phone on the street. Don't wear expensive watches, jewellery, expensive shades or BB cap as that attracts them in feral packs. These mainly ( not always) ethnic street gangs are so brazen they will start fighting with other gangs in the middle of the day in shopping malls, even robbing stores and people on Oxford street in broad daylight. Parts of London are now not much more than favelas.

Acid, Axes, Machettes , Steel Rebar, Knifes are the weapon of choice if they cannot get guns in London. Rio and cape town are probably safer these days

A New Zealander that was in the SAS I forgot His name but is famous for His part in a couple of fire fights in Afghanistan said He and His Troops always used back packs in London so They didn't lose Their belongings.

One of the worst mass shopping center crimes I can think of was A known thug in a City in the North East . Not sure where I heard the story on the news in the early 1980's . While on drugs walked into a store with a 5 gallon bucket of gasoline and said must see fire threw it on the line at the checkout then lite them . He then waited and tried to fight off the first responders . No gun no knife . Also Anyone old enough would know what the Hells Angels Biker Gang could do with a home made pipe bomb and can of gas during the biker wars in the 70's through the 90's .

Rubber coated non serated plastic knives with a blunt tip. And they can't be over 3 inches long. Of course they must be in rainbow colors too so they aren't intimating to the more sensitive and enlightened Brit.

got to be gang related or maybe drug related. these people have no "off" switch.

Yup London is now lost. as paul says 47 dead now, but the media fails to report the HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of violent street crimes involving knives, guns and acid where the victims survive.
