Fascinating. My grandfather built a fall out shelter. I remember it being very dark and low ceiling, it was off the main cellar and was an add-on with a concrete top. If the light was out it was black as a cave in there and as a kid it scared me half to death to go in and get a can of beans.
 
Our previous home had a bomb shelter built in the 1940s out of re-enforced concrete walls and roof over 2ft thick, it only had about 12 by 12 space but it was better than nothing so i fitted it out as a fallout shelter.
