I took the time and expense to build a good sized root cellar into a hillside here. I’m ashamed to admit that I don’t take advantage of it as much as I should. It’s become a wine cellar for the most part. This year with work being so demanding I let loads of apples rot on the trees. Right now I’m wishing I had stored some for the winter months. Reguardless of my neglect on the project, I can’t stress enough how wise it is to have a way to prolong food shelf life if we loose electricity.

Interesting article. We added a 20×40 root cellar under our new house. The problem is it flooded during last springs snow melt. I added 150 yards of top soil to the back yard in the hopes of diverting the run off from reaching the house. We'll see if it works next spring.

back when I had an allotment we used to keep surplus vegetables in an old chest of drawers in a darkened cool spare bedroom.

Have a small cellar in the garage in Hungary, about 6 square meters and 6 feet deep. Just got a sandy floor but I hope to lay out a brick floor to walk on and to absorb and give off moisture better. Good find Jonnte, thank you, GP

personally I'm a little ashamed I haven't used to full extent my "cold cellar" we have in my apartment house,it's not big but still, as excuse I give ; too much work and no play and more work..

can you post hole dig some sumps down there - connect to one with a sump pump >>> good chance you'll continue to get that seepage even with the improved drainage - a 10" sump hole down 3ft holds some gallonage

I made one of these years ago using a 50 gallon poly drum - use it for a long term dry storage cache for my bigger items that can't go down a PVC pipe cache >> it'll be a food cache & root cellar during a SHTF after I empty it out of my stashed survival gear ....

drainage around the container is important - need to reduce that water ground pressure and any flood water that can't drain fast - have 4" of pea gravel around the barrel sides and 8" on the bottom - for barrel stability, it rests on 8" solid concrete blocks >>>> for additional water drain I augered a 10" sump hole another 5 feet below the basic hole dug for the barrel - it's pea gravel filled also ....

I left the barrel rim and cover/tension band a few inches above ground - for disguise I built a fake fire pit on top >>> takes a few minutes to disassemble & open ....
